Course Description: A continuation of the fundamentals of harmony and basic elements of sight-singing, melodic dictation, rhythmic dictation, keyboard, timbre, texture, and form used both in aural and visual analysis. Course has a required laboratory session. Pre-requisite: MU160. 3:2:4
Educational Philosophy: In order to be a truly "complete" musician you must understand how the music "works" from within. Skill as a performer is only one side of the coin. Just as a computer technician must know the principles of how computers work, so must you know the principles of melody, harmony, counterpoint, and all the other aspects of music in order to learn your music and play with understanding. My aim is to equip you with these skills, not for their own sake, but to give you a foundation to support your study and performance.
Learning Outcomes:1. You will continue to become familiar with and proficient in chord construction and inversionm,part-writing,and elementary modulation.
2. You will apply these concepts at the keyboard.
3. You will continue to develop proficiency in listening and sight-singing.
4. You will have regulat assignments to be completed out of class.
Course Assessment: Based on in-class participation and outside assignments completed in a timely manner.
Grading: Your grade will be based on the following:
Daily class work 60%
Outside assignments,ongoing exams 40%
Late Submission of Course Materials: All assignments will lose one (1) letter grade for each late day.
Classroom Rules of Conduct: The basis of classroom conduct is mutual respect. I assume you are all here to learn and will expect a courteous, respectful attitude from and toward everyone. In keeping with the ideal of a distraction-free learning environment, all students will set their cell phones and pagers to "vibrate" or turn them off. Please leave the room if you must take a call. I believe in a relaxed, friendly classroom environment. Please help to maintain it.
