Course Description:
Continuation of IS315. The student will continue to study the concepts and methods used in a system development life cycle.  In addition, the student will gain practical experience by working on various projects.  The student will use a CASE tool for his/her project work. Pre-requisite: IS315. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
The facilitator's educational philosophy is one of interactiveness based on lectures, readings, dialogues, examinations, videos, and writings. The facilitator will engage each learner in what is referred to as disputatious learning to encourage the lively exploration of ideas, issues and contradictions.

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Distinguish logical versus physical models and translate logical process and data models into physical design models using design/ CASE software.
  2. Evaluate and make architectural design decisions given a problem scenario: Client Server, Centralized versus Decentralized, Database and distribution of data, User and system interface alternatives (inputs/outputs)
  3. Explain design principles for Input/Output with regard to human interaction and user acceptability.
  4. Explain advantages and disadvantages of data storage options (i.e. Relational Database, Object Database, Conventional Files and Data Warehouse)
  5. Practice key concepts of analysis and design as well as advance techniques such as JAD, Prototyping, USE CASES and/or other OOA/OOD techniques.
  6. Evaluate strengths/weaknesses and applicable roles of several strategies/methodologies for design of information systems including Model Driven, RAD, Agile, OO development, and Prototyping.
  7. Apply Quality Assurance steps that can be taken in all phases of development to ensure a quality product and user acceptance.
  8. Communicate both orally and in writing as an individual and as a member of a team.

Grading:
*  Exams are 100 points each.
*  Term paper is 100 points.
*  Presentation 100 points
*  Computer lab and attendance are 100 points.

100-90 = A (4.0 honor points)
89-80 = B (3.0 honor points)
79-70 = C (2.0 honor points)
69-60 = D (1.0 honor point)
Below 60 = F (no honor points)

Late Submission of Course Materials:
a. Late Homework: Late homework or assignments will take a 10 point deduction for each day (not class) missed. Coordination with me prior to an absence for turn in or having another student turn in your work can be authorized with advance notice.
b. Make-up Examinations: Make-up examinations will only be given without a valid excused absence and approved by the instructor.  All make-up tests must be scheduled before the next class session or a zero will be given for the exam.  If a make-up test is granted, I will schedule a day for taking the missed exam.
c. Incompletes: As a rule, incomplete grades will not be given. Incomplete grades will not be given for student laziness (i.e. work not in on time; missing exams; student missing final...etc.) Exceptions to the rule do exist, however: If a death in the student's immediate family (spouse, child, parent, grandparent, sibling, aunt, or uncle) affects the overall performance of the student in the course or if the student missies a significant portion of the class due to their hospitalization, the student may be allowed to petition for an incomplete and make up the work. The instructor retains the right to veto any such petition, or grant an incomplete in other unforeseen circumstances.
d. Withdraws:  The enrollment status of the student in this course is solely the responsibility of the student. If you wish to change your status in this course, be sure that you file the appropriate paperwork with the registrar before the appropriate deadlines. If you wish to drop, do not just stop coming to class!!!!

Class until notified otherwise by the Campus Center Director.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
1.  I expect you to read the syllabus and to make yourself aware of all requirements and deadlines associated with this class.  

2.  Be prepared for class. This means that you have read the assigned readings and are prepared to discuss  them.  This course will consist of class discussion, small group discussion, computer lab, and lecture.  You are expected to take part in the discussions and group work.  Also, every aspect of the assigned readings will not always be reviewed in class, but examinations will be from both assigned readings, computer lab, and class discussions.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "WH".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
