Welcome to CS 140!  My name is Bill Gaught and I will be your instructor.  I live in Orlando, Florida where I retired after a 22-year career in the Air Force.  Now I’m “semi-retired”.  I coach baseball at a local high school and teach for Park University.  I have been working with computers and information technology for over 20 years, and my education includes bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science and a master's degree in space operations.  Currently I am working on a doctorate in education with a specialization in information technology.

I have taught 15 years as an adjunct professor at various uniaught 15 years as an adjunct professor at various universities and this is my 22nd quarter to teach internet classes for Park University.  CS 140 is one of my favorite classes to teach online.

I look forward to teaching the class and meeting the students.

Course Description

CS 140 Introduction to Computers. This course introduces computer concepts, terminology, and applications to enable students to use computers in their education and career.  This class will feature lectures. written assignments, and demonstrations of computer concepts.  The lab will concentrate on hands-on computer lab projects using the dominant Windows operating system and Office applications.  Software will include Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Internet browsers.  Students will be introduced to the structure and use of personal computer hardware, peripherals, comparison of popular operating systems, recent history of technology and some ethical implications.  3:0:3.

Overview and Course Goals:

Welcome to CS 140 - Introduction to Computers online.  The next few weeks will require intensive effort to complete the Textbook assignments, Lab assignments, Quizzes and Tests, Weekly Threaded Discussions and Attendance requirements.

Textbook.  The course textbook assignments will provide information about Information technology concepts, the Internet and World Wide Web, application and system software, computer hardware components, telecommunications and the relationship to Information Technology, file, databases, and e-commerce.  How Information Technology affects society will be also be part of the course.

Office Lab Assignments.  By the end of the course you should be proficient in the use of Windows XP, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and familiar with Access concepts and its relationship to Excel.  The lab book and accompanying materials will aid you in your weekly hands-on computer assignments.  Begin early every week to complete these assignments.  In order to complete the course, a computer with Windows XP operating system and Office 2003 software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.

Other Assignments will include participating in on-line discussions 1. What I have Learned  2. Students' Questions and Answers and 3.  Peer review of artifacts.

Quizzes and a Final Test are required in this course.  There will be a quiz Week 4 and the final Week 8.

Attendance is required and is considered part of your grade.  Begin work early in the week and complete all assignments as soon as possible.  This will allow time to have questions answered should you experience difficulty with technology or the concepts. It will also allow time to respond to the discussion threads in a thoughtful manner. 

Week 1 The first thing to do is respond to the Introductions thread.  The Textbook assignment will require you to read Chapter 1 Introduction to Information Technology and Chapter 2 The Internet & World Wide Web.  After reading the chapters, take the MC (Multiple Choice) and FB (Fill in the Blank) on-line quizzes for each chapter found at McGraw-Hill.  

There will be a Windows assignment to complete Week 1.  Submit to the course drop box.  Students need the SimNet CD to Install the simulation. The directions to Install Simnet are found in Doc Sharing.  Students must respond several times a week to the Discussion threads.

Week 2 The Textbook assignment will require you to read Chapter 3 Application Software and Chapter 4 System Software.  After reading the chapters, take the MC (Multiple Choice) and FB (Fill in the Blank) on-line quizzes for each chapter found at McGraw-Hill.  Follow the directions to submit to the course dropboxes.

Prior to completing any of the required lab assignments, students must use the Advantage Lab book and the data files (download using the Web Sites page in Course Home) to practice concepts and skills.  Students should not skip ahead to complete the required assignments without the background knowledge necessary.  After reviewing and practicing, then students should complete the required Word Assignments 1, 2, and 3. The files for those assignments are found in Doc Sharing. Submit to the course dropboxes.  Students should form the habit of using the Help menu available in all Office 2003 applications--Word, Excel, PowerPoint. 

Respond several times a week to the Discussion threads set up by your instructor.

Students are encouraged to keep a weekly Journal of Textbook and Lab Book ideas and concepts learned through reading, discussion threads, and hands-on assignments.  The Journal will enable the students to write the Week 8 Summaries. It is never too early to submit the Proctor Form for approval for the final test.

Week 3 The Textbook assignment will require you to read Chapter 5 Hardware--The CPU & Storage and Chapter 6 Hardware--Input and Output.  There are review quizzes for each chapter to complete.  Submit the quizzes to the correct dropboxes. 

There are Word Assignments to complete.  Prior to completing required assignments, students must practice the skills found in the Advantage Lab book. Skipping ahead usually results in frustration.  Students should also use the Word Help function.  After practicing using the Advantage lab book, students should follow the directions and complete assignments 4, 5, and 6.  Submit to the course dropboxes.  Respond several times a week to the Discussion threads set up by your instructor. Continue to use the Journal for textbook terminology, concepts and Office 2003 helpful tools.  By Week 8 students will have a list to review and summarize. 

Week 4 The Textbook assignment will require you to read Chapter 7 Telecommunications:  Networks and Communications and Chapter 8 Files, Databases & E-Commerce.  After reading the chapters, take the MC (Multiple Choice) and FB (Fill in the Blank) on-line quizzes for each chapter found at McGraw-Hill. Follow the directions and submit to the correct course dropbox. 

There are Word Assignments to complete.  Use the Advantage lab book, practice concepts, and then follow the directions and complete assignments 7, 8a, 8b, and 8c.  Submit to the correct course dropboxes.  Respond several times a week to the Discussion threads.  Don't forget to cut and paste items of interest into the Journal for Week 8. Take the Quiz.  Submit the Proctor Form found on the first page when you log on to the course.

Week 5 The Textbook assignment will require you to read Chapter 9 The Challenges of the Digital Age and Chapter 10 The Promises of the Digital Age  After reading the chapters, take the MC (Multiple Choice) and FB (Fill in the Blank) on-line quizzes for each chapter found at McGraw-Hill. Take the 2 quizzes for each chapter, follow the directions and submit to the correct course dropboxes. 

There is a PowerPoint presentation to view and a PowerPoint assignment to complete.  Use the Advantage lab book for directions.  Submit the completed PowerPoint Presentation as an attachment to one of the Discussion threads this week for peer review.  There is a SimNet Excel tutorial assignment.  Your instructor will tell you how to complete and submit this assignment to the course.  Respond often to the Discussion threads.  Don't forget to use the Journal.

Week 6 The Textbook assignment will require you to read Chapter 11 Information Systems.  After reading the chapter, take the MC (Multiple Choice) and FB (Fill in the Blank) on-line quizzes for the chapter found at McGraw-Hill.  Follow the directions as usual to submit the assignments to the proper course dropboxes.

There are Excel Assignments to complete.  This will be a time-consuming week for lab work. Use your Advantage Lab book to practice the concepts and skills before attempting to follow the directions in the content area to the left to complete Excel assignments 1, 2, and 3.  Submit to the correct course dropboxes. Respond in a timely manner to the Discussion threads set up by your instructor.

Be sure your Proctor Examination Form is submitted to your instructor this week in order to take the Final Examination.

Week  7 The Textbook assignment is to brieflysummarize the Challenges of the Digital Age (Chapter 9) in three or four paragraphs or more.  Post the summary to the Discussion thread as a word attachment so other students may respond to your ideas.
There are Excel Assignments to complete. Use the Advantage lab book to review and practice the skills and concepts necessary before attempting to complete assignments 4, 5, and 6.  Submit to the course dropboxes.  Respond several times each week to the Discussion threads set up by your instructor.

Week 8 The first assignment is to summarize major textbook concepts you have read about, post and discuss in the threads.  This will be part of your Discussion grade this week. It should be at least one page in length and show evidence of critical thinking on your part. Students who used the Journal every week will have the research completed for the assignment. The second assignment is to summarize some of the major hands-on Office concepts that you have learned in this course and discuss ways that you believe have been or will be beneficial.  The is the second part of your discussion grade this week. 

The Lab assignment is to complete the SimNet Access tutorial and submit to the course as directed by your instructor.  The is the final week so say farewell in the Discussion thread.  Take the Final Examination.

* Understand and use a word processing package to write advanced level term papers, resumes, and business letters.
* Understand and use a spreadsheet package. (Emphasis on needs of Accounting. Business, Computer Science, and Education students)
* Understand and use a database package. (Emphasis on needs of Computer Science, Education, and Business students.)
* Prepare a graphics presentation applicable to the student’s major area of study.
* Understand and use the Internet and e-mail accounts on a beginning level.

Required Software: Students must have the following software installed on their computer:
Windows XP and Office 2003 Student Edition (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)  Access will be taught using the SimNet module. 

This class uses the      Microsoft Windows XP Operating System.

Course Policies

Course-Specific Policies:

All students are expected to follow the rules for acceptable conduct and good manners.  Any student, who does not adhere to these guidelines will be excused from class and reported to the proper authorities.

I will check my Office and e-mail daily after 10:00 p.m. (CST or CDST). Expect a response from me within 24 hours. 

All assignments are to be completed on time and submitted to the correct course dropbox.  Special instructions regarding Excel and Access SimNet assignments will be given at the beginning of the week the assignment is due.  Late work will receive credit at the discretion of the instructor.  All computer assignments should be clearly marked with the student's name.  Word and Excel assignments should have a footer with the student's name, date and time completed, and page number.  Work received without identification cannot receive credit.

Grading Policy

Students will use the Grade Book to track their grades throughout the course.  Please allow time for submitted assignments to be posted.  Generally speaking it will take 24 hours for a grade to be posted into the grade book.  Early submissions will be graded but not viewable until the deadline for that assignment has passed.

The Grading Rubric for assignments is posted in the Doc Sharing area of the course.

a. Chapter Quizzes, Office Lab Assignments, Participation in class discussions, Mid-term and Final tests and Attendance will be taken into consideration for the course grade. (See Grading Scale below) 

b. The Textbook chapter concepts are evaluated each week by completing the online Multiple Choice and Fill in the Blank quizzes on the McGraw-Hill web site.  The quiz results are graded online and should not be submitted until a 100% score is received. The directions at the end of each page should be followed to submit to the course for a grade.  The quiz results should be saved and reviewed before the mid-term and final tests.

c. The Windows Assignments Week 1 will be evaluated on development of a document submitted on time that displays the required elements as well as proper formatting, grammar, spelling, completeness and demonstrate the main ideas and concepts learned in this module. 

d. The Word Assignments Weeks 2, 3, and 4 will be evaluated on submitted documents received on time that demonstrate the application of concepts taught and exhibit correct formatting, spelling, creative thinking, and research skills if necessary.

e. The Powerpoint Assignment Week 5 will be evaluated on submission by date due, the demonstration of skills taught, use of the tools on a beginning to intermediate level, and exhibiting creative use of media on the part of the student.  Students are expected to participate in the peer review of the projects as part of the grade.

f. The Excel Assignments Weeks 6 and 7 will be evaluated on spreadsheets submitted before or on the date due that demonstrate the application of concepts and exhibit correct formatting, data, and formulas.  The formulas behind the data will be checked for accuracy.

i. The SimNet Access Assignment will be evaluated as to timeliness and demonstrating that the Learning Core has been completed by submitting the scores from the SimNet module.

j. Peer review of various weekly assignments as noted in the course are also taken into consideration as part of the participation grade. 

k. The Journal articles begun Week 2 will not be graded but will be beneficial to write the summaries for Weeks 7 and 8.  The Week 7 and 8 summaries will be helpful to review for the final test Week 8.  Week 7 and 8 summaries will be included as part of the Discussion grade for those weeks.

l. Students will receive attendance grades using the Activity feature in the Gradebook.

m. Students are expected to participate in all the Discussion threads at least 3 times or more a week.  The threads will be helpful to answer any questions that will arise about lab or course work and gain knowledge of textbook concepts.

  • Submission of Late Work: Late work is not acceptable.  Any credit received is at the discretion of the instructor.
  • Proctored final examination/Project - This course requires a proctored final examination.  See the information below:.  
    • A final proctored examination will be taken in a proctored testing environment during the 8th week at one of the Park University sites around the country or at an alternative location.  For proctored examinations, photo identification is required at the time of the test.  Guidelines for selecting an acceptable proctor can be found on the Park University Website. 
    • Other Information on proctored exams:
      • It will be the responsibility of the student to arrange for a proctor, by the 6th week of the term, who is accepted and approved by the course instructor. 
      • Approval of proctors is the discretion of the Online instructor. 
      • A proctor request form will be made available to you during the first week of class so that you can send your requested proctor to your instructor for approval. 
      • Failure to take a final proctored exam (or submit your final project for some online graduate courses) will result in an automatic "F" grade.

Academic Honesty

Academic integrity is the foundation of the academic community.  Because each student has the primary responsibility for being academically honest, students are advised to read and understand all sections of this policy relating to standards of conduct and academic life. 

Definitions

Academic dishonesty includes committing or the attempt to commit cheating, plagiarism, falsifying academic records, and other acts intentionally designed to provide unfair advantage to the students.

  • Cheating includes, but is not limited to, intentionally giving or receiving unauthorized aid or notes on examinations, papers, laboratory reports, exercises, projects, or class assignments which are intended to be individually completed.  Cheating also includes the unauthorized copying of tests or any other deceit or fraud related to the student's academic conduct.
  • Plagiarism involves the use of quotation without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignments (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing.
  • Falsifying academic records includes, but is not limited to, altering grades or other academic records.
  • Other acts that constitute academic dishonesty include:
    • Stealing, manipulating, or interfering with an academic work of another student or faculty member.
    • Collusion with other students on work to be completed by one student.
    • Lying to or deceiving a faculty member.

Procedure

In the event of alleged academic dishonesty, an Academic Dishonesty Incident Report will be submitted to an Online Academic Director who will then investigate the charge.  Students who engage in academic dishonesty are subject to a range of disciplinary actions, from a failing grade on the assignment or activity in question to expulsion from Park UniversityPark University's academic honesty policy and related procedures can be found in full in the 2004-2005 Park University Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs.

 
Attendance

Professors are required to keep attendance records and report absences throughout the term. Excused absences can be granted by the instructor for medical reasons, school sponsored activities, and employment-related demands including temporary duty. The student is responsible for completing all missed work.  Any student failing to attend class for two consecutive weeks, without an approved excuse from their instructor, will be administratively withdrawn and notified via email that you have been withdrawn and a grade of "WH" will be recorded.

An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term.  PLEASE NOTE:  Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation.  Participation grades will be assigned by each individual instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.
