Course Description:
This course presents the theory of operating systems and an overview of one or more operating system environments. Operating system concepts covered should include (but are not limited to): process management, memory management, I/O management, file management, and security. Theory concepts will be put into practice with exercises, some requiring college algebra skills and/or basic programming knowledge. Operating system environments may include (but are not limited to): Windows, UNIX, and Linux. PREREQUISITES: CS 208 and CS 225. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
My approach to teaching involves the integration of lectures, readings, quizzes, discussion forums, internet research, along with my experiences to expose students to a variety of media and materials.  Students are encouraged to share their experiences and ideas to facilitate a positive learning environment.

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. General concepts: Explain the basic concepts and functions common to all operating systems. Explain the basic concepts and functions common to all Operating systems. Examine the concepts of security, including cryptography, user authentication, attacks from inside and outside the system, and protection mechanisms.
  2. Process Management: Examine the concepts and techniques of process and thread management, including interrupts and multitasking. Discuss CPU scheduling algorithms. Examine the concepts of deadlock, including deadlock detection, deadlock recovery, deadlock avoidance, and deadlock prevention.
  3. Memory Management: Examine the concepts and techniques of memory management such as virtual memory, paging, segmentation, and page replacement algorithms.
  4. File and I/O Managements: Examine the concepts and techniques of file systems, including files and directories. Examine the concepts and techniques of Input/Output, including I/O hardware and software.


Core Assessment:

For this course, the assessment artifact is a final exam which counts for 20% of the grade. In the
artifact there will be 4 questions in each of the categories. ( Critical Thinking: Synthesis, Analysis, Evaluation;  Content: Terminology, Concepts, Application; and Technical Skills: Whole Artifact, Component, Relationship) Thus, there will be 32 questions total in the final exam artifact. The artifact will test all four of the core learning objectives in each category.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
All assignments are due 11:59 PM Eastern Daylight Time on Sunday of the academic week.  There will be 10% penalty for late assignments.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
All students are expected to follow the rules for acceptable conduct and good manners.  Any student, who does not adhere to these guidelines will be excused from class and reported to the proper authorities.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.
