Course Description:
An examination of human and physical geography and the role it plays in military planning of operations, its role in the eventual military outcomes, and a detailed analysis of how their results impacted the local and global society. Historic examples from around the world will be utilized for investigations. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
On-line learning is very similar to a traditional classroom.  Even though you are not meeting face-to-face, you are required to learn the same amount of material.  My advise to you would be to spend the same amount of time on this course as you would a traditional course.  You spend approximately 5 hours a week in the classroom, so spend at least 5 hours a week reading your lectures, taking quizzes, and exploring the information available in your virtual classroom.  Spend additional time studying for your tests, writing papers and additional homework.  If you do this, you should suceed in the virtual classroom.

  Instructor Learning Outcomes

  1. Evaluate how phuscal and human geographic factors influence militar operations and provide examples.
  2. Apply the knowledge, especially of maps to access geographic advantages and disadvantages to a setting.
  3. Explain the roles and missions of the various militaries throughout the world and throughout history.
  4. Analyze the evolving relationship between the military and the environment.
Class Assessment:
Each week you will have regular learning activities:
READINGS....Text and supplemental readings
LECTURE....Powerpoint presentations with limited audio.  (The audio wll draw attention to particularly important subject matter.)
DISCUSSIONS....Respond at least one topic each week, and post a response to a classmate's posting.  You are required to post at least 3 times during the week.  The first must be posted by Wednesday, second by Thursday and the final posting by Sunday.
QUIZZES....complete the map quizzes week 2, week 4, and week 5.
EXAMS....Complete the semester exams week 2, week 4, week 6; and the comprehensive (proctored) final exam during week 8.
TERM PAPER....In addition to the above weekly assignments, a 6-10 page term paper is required.  The subject should address the geographic influence on a particular battle or campaign.  The paper should include a historical context of the situation; a geographic overview; the specific geographic impact on the tactics, strategy and/or actual operations; and the outcome.
Possible topics, but are not limited to:  Normandy, 1940 German Invasion of the West, Crete, Market Garden, Barbarossa 1941, Dien Bien Phu, Anzio, Desert Storm, Khe Sanh, etc.
This paper should be in APA, MLA or similar format.
Be sure to cite within the paper as well as give a reference page.
Appropriate maps and references must be included.
The paper topic must be submitted by Sunday of week 2, and the final document submitted by Sunday of week 7.

I will round up if all of your work for the term is completed.  There can be no missing or late (without prior approval) for this to apply.
 

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Assignments will be accepted up to one week after the due date (except for work due week 8).  There will be a 10% penalty for late work.  Students may NOT make up quizzes or exams missed without PRIOR approval.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Class attendance and participation are expected.  You have 7 days to complete the work for the week.  In accordance with University Policy, attendence will be taken and reported.  Any student who has 2 consecutive weeks of unexcused absence will be administratively withdrawn.  All students will be accountable for all materials presented throughout the course.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Park University 2008-2009 Undergraduate Catalog Page 87

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.
