Course Description:
BI306 Biological Literature: A one-semester study of the biological thought and the methods of biological communication. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition and use of biological literature. Writing and evaluation of scientific papers is stressed. This course is to be taken during the junior year. The course will satisfy the EN306 requirement for Biology majors. Prerequisites: EN105, EN106, passing WCT and 60 accumulated hours. 3:0:3

  2. perform bibliographical searches using several different kinds of indexes and electronically;
  3. locate and evaluate information from the scientific literature;
  4. determine the main idea(s) of a scientific article, and discuss them with peers;
  5. read and critique written scientific literature;
  6. properly cite scientific sources;
  7. prepare and exhibit a poster on a topic of research;
  8. prepare written reports in a format accepted by the Council of Science Editors;
  9. Produce a fully cited review paper on research proposal that could be used to conduct independent research.

Class Assessment:

Classes will consist primarily of discussions, in and out of class assignments, library research, paper reviews, grammatical and editoral assignments, poster construction and presentation, and paper development.  Because this course involves a significant amount of independent work, students should expect to spend significant out of class time.

LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.  This course is meant to prepare you for real world writing and research and real world deadlines that have no exceptions.   (Example:  If the abstract deadline for the conference is 12:00pm July 1st, that is it until next year.)

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

  • While computers make writing and revising much easier and more productive as well as are a requirement for PowerPoint, students must recognize that technology can also cause problems.  Printers run out of ink and hard drives crash.  Students must be responsible for planning ahead and meeting deadlines in spite of technology.  Be sure to back-up copies of your work to disk, hard drive, and/or print out paper copies. “The computer lab is out of paper” is not an excuse. 
     

    The instructor strives to create an informal and comfortable classroom environment for class discussions. However, this is an educational forum and the students are expected to act accordingly. Students will treat fellow classmates and the instructor with respect. Disruptive or deliberately unhelpful viewpoints will not be tolerate.


    Cell phones should be turned off prior to class unless special circumstances exist.

    Plagiarism:
    Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Park University 2008-2009 Undergraduate Catalog Page 87

    Attendance Policy:
    Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

    1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
    2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
    3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
    4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
    5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
    6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
