Course Description:
PS424 Industrial and Organizational Psychology - PreRequisite: PS101. - This course examines various psychological applications in the workplace including research, testing, making personnel decisions, training, appraising performance, organization structure, teamwork, satisfaction, occupational health, motivation and leadership. 3:0:3

  1. Identify key terminology, theories, principles, and strategies utilized within the field of industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology.
  2. Analyze organizational problems and design empirical research studies that attempt to test hypotheses related to these problems.
  3. Evaluate concepts within I/O psychology and differentiate their potential uses within various organizational dilemmas.
  4. Review, evaluate, and interpret empirical research findings related to I/O psychology, assessing their applicability to organizations.
  5. Analyze real-world organizational problems and design appropriate applications of I/O strategies that may solve these problems.

Application Paper (Core Assessment)

Due: Week 6

Each student will select a film or television program that depicts a situation in a business setting or business organization and will analyze the film/program addressing two of the following topic areas: organizational research, employee selection, training, motivation, and/or leadership. During the search for appropriate films or programs, students should be mindful of what organizational problems are being depicted and select only films or programs that have clear-cut organizational issues that fall under the topics listed.    

Before the paper is written, and by a date previously announced in the course, a half-page synopsis of the project will be submitted to the instructor and will include the following information: the title of the film or television program, a brief description of the film/program and characters involved, a brief definition of the problem(s) that are evident in the organization that is depicted, and the two I/O topic areas to be addressed. The synopsis should be approved by the instructor before the student proceeds with the project. 

Research related to the specified organizational problem(s) selected for study from the film/program is to be conducted from a review of literature comprising seven references that may not include the textbook. Five of the seven references are to be scholarly in nature. 

Each student should synthesize, analyze, and evaluate observations of conditions and actions in the film/program to arrive at a well-justified recommendation for a possible solution to the problem(s), citing data and information from the literature review to support the recommendation. The solution designation is to describe in detail the recommended actions that need to be taken, including who should take the actions, in order to solve the stated problem(s). The solution is likely to be multifaceted.  

Papers should include the following sections: 

1. Introduction – Include a brief description of the film/program and characters involved

2. Problem(s) – Describe in detail the specific problems found in this organization and how they relate to the two chosen topic areas. Since the instructor of the course may not have seen this film/program, it is important that this problem be defined in great detail, including several specific examples, to provide evidence of the existence of the stated problem(s). 
3. Recommendations – In this section the specific recommended solution will be carefully outlined. This recommendation should include 1) the steps that should be taken, 2) who should take those steps, and 3) the reasons underlying the recommendation. This section of the paper should be the longest and most complex section and should demonstrate the logical and critical integration of data analysis and literature review that has gone into making the final recommendations.    

5. Conclusion – Describe the likely success of the recommended solution, including potential shortcomings or potential negative side-effects resulting from the implementation of this solution. 

6. References – Document all written and other media resources for the paper including the source of the film or television program.   

Papers should be double-spaced, in 12-point font, and in APA style. The paper should include at least seven references, five of which are from refereed journals. This paper is worth up to 100 points. A summary of requirements may be found below.

Each paper accurately uses psychological terms relating to industrial and organizational psychology. 
The research paper contains the following sections: Introduction, Problem, Recommendations, Conclusion, and References, all in APA style. 
The student describes in detail all aspects of an organizational problem that exists in the selected organization and is related to the I/O topics being discussed. Relevant data should be collected through a review of the literature, and observation of the selected movie/show.    
The student develops a productive and realistic solution to an organizational problem situation in the selected organization.  Evidence from refereed journals should be used to justify this recommended solution.

Most work will be graded by the Tuesday night following the final due date for each week, which will always be a Sunday. Group Case reports may take an additional day or two to grade.  Grades will always be posted in the gradebook, and students may click on these grades to view feedback related to each of the assignments.  Work will be graded using the rubrics found in doc sharing within the course, so please review those carefully before completing work.  Don't be afraid to ask questions! 

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Generally, late work will not be accepted.  In rare cases, exceptions may be made.  These exceptions, which must be verified, include the following:
 
  • A medical emergency or a serious acute illness.
  • An Accident or Police Emergency. 
  • Unforeseen Jury or Witness Duty. 
  • Unforeseen Military Deployment or Activation.
  • Funerals for Immediate Family Member

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

I expect that the interactions and communications in this class will be civil and professional. Derogatory language, profanity, and personal attacks are unacceptable. To facilitate uniformity, I expect that papers will be double-spaced with 1 inch margins and in Times New Roman font (12pt). Submission of papers written for other classes is not acceptable. Each paper that you submit in this class should be a unique paper created by you. Violation of this will result in at least a failing grade for the assignment.

Please recognize that technology can cause problems. Printers run out of ink, Internet connections die, and hard drives crash. You are responsible for planning ahead and meeting deadlines in spite of these potential problems. Be sure to save copies of your submissions to a disk or hard drive.  

A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday and Sunday. The first week begins the first day of the term and ends midnight the last Sunday of the term. Assignments scheduled for completion during a class week should be completed by Sunday of the week assigned. It is important to understand that this is not a course where assignments can be posted at any time during the 8-week term; there is a strict deadline each week for that week's assignments. Assignments posted after the weekly deadline will not receive credit.

The classroom is for public messages. Students should use e-mail for private messages to the instructor and other students. All e-mails sent to the instructor and other students should include "PS424" in the subject line of the e-mail. Students are required to use Pirate Mail for all online classes. Students should have a current anti-virus software and should update their software weekly as a protection to themselves as well as others who are participating in this class. This is everyone's responsibility.

This course is reading intensive, so please keep up! All students will participate in weekly discussions and group case analyses. All assignments need to be submitted by posting assignments in the classroom threads or into the dropbox. If it becomes necessary for an assignment to be sent via e-mail or FAX, arrangements need to be made before the assignment is due.

Online Etiquette/Courtesy

Online communications need to be composed with fairness, honesty, and tact. Spelling and grammar are very important in an online class. What you put into an online course reflects on your level of professionalism. It is important not to take disagreement personally. Responses to different ideas and observations need to be objective. Being objective means maintaining boundaries and not attacking others or making statements that have the potential to be taken personally. An important part of online learning is discussion. Differences in thinking are good because our knowledge is broadened. Because we have differences, we may have conflict. The important thing is to handle conflict in a way that does not create defensiveness which does not promote learning.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.
