Course Description:
MG352 Principles of Management (MLL): Examines the functions, activities and principles of leadership in business and other institutions. Philosophy, history, current practice and issues in leasing, planning organizing, and controlling organizations such as communication, motivation and interpersonal realations. Lecture, discussion and cases are used. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
The world of management is dynamic, complex, and challenging. A strong foundation in management is essential to being successful in all dimensions of the business world. Every student should have the opportunity to learn. To maximize learning, a student must engage actively in self-learning, attend scheduled classes, complete all assignments, and participate in class sessions. Lectures with student interaction, problem-solving, case analysis, individual/group projects and presentations, examinations and other applications to real-world situations will be used to accomplish learning outcomes.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Define “management” and explain the managerial significance of “effectiveness” and “efficiency”.
  2. List the basic functions of management.
  3. Describe the difference between leadership and management.
  4. Distinguish between mechanistic and organic organizations
  5. Describe four social responsibility strategies.
  6. Define the concept of synergy and how it relates to management of organizations.
  7. Evaluate and describe four characteristics common to all organizations.

Core Assessment:
The assessment device is a comprehensive case that is written in class during week 13 of sixteen week classes and during week 7 of eight week classes. The case poses problems faced by a fictional organization in which the solutions are presented by knowledge of the above objectives.
A CLOSED BOOK, CLOSED NOTES comprehensive examination that must be administered and proctored in the classroom and may not be given as a take-home examination. Students should not have access to the exam or its questions before it is administered. 

Class Assessment:
Formal lecture, class discussions, case analysis, and problem solving, both individually and collectively, will be utilized in the classroom. Students are required to read assigned chapters and complete any assigned written work. Students are expected to complete and present individual and group projects. Students are also expected to be prepared to present case study oral and written information as requested.  Any essay assignments should be completed in APA format. All class presentations should be accomplished via a PowerPoint format.  Reviews and pretesting will be used to prepare students for exams. Testing will consist of a midterm exam and a comprehensive final exam.  


The final course grade will be determined using the following measurements:

The following will be used to assign letter grades:
>=90%       A
80%-89.9%   B
70%-79.9%   C
60%-69.9%   D
<=59.9%     F

Extra Credit Work:  No extra credit work will be assigned.
Missed Work:  If you are going to be absent, any assigned work must be emailed to the instructor prior to the applicable missed class period.
Exams:  Will include any or all of the following formats: multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, true or false, and short essay questions.  Please Note:  Make-up exams will only be given in cases of extreme situations or emergencies.  The instructor must be notified and coordinated in advance.  The exam must be taken before the next class period.
Attendance:  Students will receive a -5 points on their final class average for each unexcused absence.
Class Participation:  Your class participation score will be determined as follows.  Initially, everyone will be assigned a participation grade equal to the average of their exam scores. This preliminary score will be adjusted up or down based upon your class performance throughout the semester. During each class, I will call on students to answer questions concerning the subject matter assigned. If you consistently demonstrate that you are not prepared for class, you will lose class participation points. Please check with me anytime during the semester, if you have questions about how I determine your class participation grade.

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business and Management courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business and Management.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Late submission of course material will be allowed. However, an automatic 10 points per late class period will be subtracted from late submission material grades. Late submission of course material is a privilege, not a right, for the student. As the instructor, I have the right to refuse any late submission of course material.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

Students are expected to be on time, attend all classes, have read the entire applicable chapter(s), have completed homework assignments, and actively participate in class discussions. Homework assignments and examinations must be legible.  The student should have access to a PC for some assignment completions.

Everyone will conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. Disruptive behavior WILL NOT be tolerated.  Disruptive students will be asked to leave the classroom. 
Everyone benefits from productive class participation. Turn off all cell phones before entering the classroom. When I am instructing the class, avoid any sidebar conversations.  Open dialogue and classroom participation are a must for this class to be successful.  Please speak clearly, in a moderate tone, and only when the floor is open.

I enjoy teaching and visiting with my students. Since many of us (including your instructors) work during the day and travel at night, email may be the best method in contacting me.

As the instructor, I reserve the right to make changes to the class assignment schedule as needed. As we progress in the course, I may make changes to the syllabus (e.g., if I determine we need more or less time on a certain subject area). Students will be notified of any changes in class and/or via email. Any changes will be made in advance, in time for the student to have adequate preparation time.

Academic Honesty:

Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
