Course Description:
This course presents various philosophies, terminology, and techniques used in the analysis and implementation of the system development life cycle.  The student will investigate such areas as project proposals, logical systems, flow diagrams, data remodeling, dictionaries, and documentation.  The student will learn how to use a CASE tool.  Pre-requisite: IS205. 3:0:3

  6. Identify the responsibilities of the Project Manager and discuss why they are important to the success of the project.
  7. Practice systems analysis traditional tasks: Problem analysis, Requirements analysis. Decision analysis
  8. Build process and data models for analysis within the system development life cycle.
  9. Differentiate between logical and physical models.
  10. Communicate both orally and in writing as an individual and as a member of a team.

Week 1: Systems Analysis Fundamentals

Overview & Introductions: Review the syllabus, course policies, and assignment schedule. Write a paragraph about yourself and submit it to the classroom in the "Introductions" thread.

Lecture: Read the lecture on "Using a CASE Tool".

Reading Assignment: Systems Analysis & Design Chapters 1, 2. Also strongly recommended are the PowerPoint slides for these chapters. They are located in each Week's section in the "PPT Slides" thread, and you can either view them online or save them for later viewing offline.

Special Note on "ff" designation: When you see a page reference followed by "ff" (for example, in the Discussion Question below, you will find "...page 23ff or 44ff...") the "ff" abbreviation means "and following" and thus designates the first of a possible series of pages. In this example you will find available questions to answer on page 23 only--since there are no more questions for this chapter. However, starting on page 44 you will also find questions on page 45. Thus the "ff" does not always mean that there are more pages but that there might be additional pages.

Groupwork: Join a group and introduce yourself in the group study area. With your group, review possibilities for a groupwork project. During the course the group will be developing a groupwork Project Document for a system development activity with which you are familiar. You should choose a simple activity from your personal life or one at work. The activity should have a definite beginning, a definite completion point, milestones to be achieved, and resources to be applied. The activity must involve more than one person. Among the group members select a Group Leader to be the contact person, and have the Group Leader send your groupwork project description to me by e-mail for approval.

Individual Project: Choose an information system for an individual project. During the course your project will be developing an Information Systems Plan for an existing or hypothetical system. Each week you will develop parts of that plan. Weekly assignments include a system description, needs analysis, feasibility analysis, data analysis, process analysis, and financial analysis. The final assignment will be to consolidate all previous assignments into one document. Once you have chosen a system, submit your choice to me by e-mail for approval, and then post it to the virtual classroom AFTER any recommended changes have been incorporated.

Lessons Learned: (Special Note: This assignment will be used by you as your personal final exam review document, so I strongly recommend that you be complete and format your Lessons Learned in a way that will make it as easy as possible to prepare for the comprehensive, closed-book and closed-notes final exam). After completing all the assignments, then develop a summary comment on individual course activities during the week. The summary may include topics that are key points, particularly useful items, or any other information that will be beneficial to the class. Incorporate at least one key term from Systems Analysis & Design on page 22ff or 44ff and include related examples from your personal observation or your work. Week 2: Managing Systems Analysis & Design Activities

Lecture: Read the lecture on "The System Development Life Cycle As A Project".

Reading Assignment: Systems Analysis & Design Chapter 3. Search the Internet for project management information. Include the following websites in the reading:

Groupwork: Write a statement of work for your groupwork Project Document. The statement of work should be in general terms and include a written narrative giving the activity a name, objectives to be achieved by the activity, when the activity begins and ends, major milestones during the activity with associated results or deliverables, how each deliverable will be measured to determine success or failure of the associated milestone, and written reports that will be generated during the activity. Save the statement of work for consolidation in the final document to be submitted during Week 8. Have the Group Leader submit a draft to me for possible suggestions.

Individual Project: Write and submit a detailed description of the information system chosen for the Information Systems Plan. Include the system name, type of system, key system benefits, along with interrelations and interdependencies with other systems. If there is an existing system to be replaced or upgraded, provide a description of the replacement or upgrade and the associated supporting technology. Submit the information system description along with a document outline for the Information Systems Plan to me for possible suggestions, then (once those suggestions are incorporated) post to the virtual classroom for grading and peer review.

Groupwork: Write a work breakdown structure statement for your groupwork Project Document. The work breakdown structure should define the hierarchy of activity tasks and associated work packages and include a structure showing tasks with associated subtasks. Save the work breakdown structure statement for consolidation in the final document to be submitted during Week 8. Have the Group Leader submit a draft to me for possible suggestions.

Individual Project: Conduct and document a 'needs analysis' for the Information Systems Plan. Include a description of the system organizational environment, stakeholders, users, levels of management served, and the organizational culture for the system. Also include how the analyst will interface with the organization and the role of the analyst in system development. Provide details on activities, methodologies, and techniques to be used in the analysis and design of the system along with planned use of CASE tools. Include the justification for CASE tool use. Send me a draft for possible suggestions, then (after the suggestions are incorporated) post the project material to the virtual classroom for grading and peer review.

Groupwork: Write an organizational structure for your groupwork Project Document. Present the structure for the activity. Show the functional responsibilities of individuals conducting the activity and reporting relationships between individuals. Have the Group Leader submit the organizational structure for possible suggestions, then consolidate everything in the final document to be submitted during Week 8.

Individual Project: Conduct and document a “feasibility analysis” for the Information Systems Plan. Include operational, technical, and economic feasibility. Provide system objectives, organizational objectives, and how system and organizational objectives are aligned. Also include necessary technology resources to support the system with associated approaches and feasibility of procuring these resources. Provide an overview of the costs for the resources and activities and the associated economic feasibility of these. Make recommendations on the feasibility of the project. Send me a draft for possible recommendations, then (after the recommendations have been incorporated) post the project material to the virtual classroom for peer review and grading.

Groupwork: Develop a schedule for your groupwork Project Document. Include the tasks, subtasks, and activities shown on the work breakdown structure as they relate to milestones shown in the statement of work. Identify the time required to complete the tasks, subtasks, and activities. Show the sequence of tasks, subtasks, and activities and how they relate to each other including dependencies and precedence relationships. Identify the critical path for the schedule. Have the Group Leader send me a draft for possible suggestions, then save the schedule for consolidation in the final document to be submitted during Week 8.

Individual Project: Document and submit a ‘data analysis' giving an overview of the system data. Show how various data relates to the system organizational environment, users, levels of management served, and the organizational culture for the system. Provide a narrative for overall data flow, elements, structure, and data stores. Illustrate the narrative with a level-0 data flow diagram of the system showing entity relationships. Send me a draft for possible recommendations, then (after the recommendations are incorporated) post the project material to the virtual classroom for peer review and grading.

Homework Problem: Choose one problem from Systems Analysis & Design on page 310ff, and develop a complete solution for the problem including examples--then submit it to the classroom. Provide peer review for at least one weekly problem solution (other than your own) in the classroom.

Groupwork: Define resources and resource loading for your groupwork Project Document. Show resources required by each task, subtask, or activity and how resources will be allocated. Provide a time-cost model for expenditure of funds. Have your Group Leader submit a draft to me for possible recommendations, and then save the resource statement for consolidation in the final document to be submitted during Week 8.

Individual Project: Conduct and develop a ‘process analysis' for the Information Systems Plan. Provide a narrative of system processes with associated data and data flow. Utilize the structured English, decision table, and decision tree logical analysis tools to perform the analysis. Send me a draft for possible recommendations, and (after incorporating the recommended changes) post the project material to the virtual classroom for peer review and grading.

Homework Problem: Choose one problem from Systems Analysis & Design on page 351ff, and develop a complete solution for the problem including examples--then submit it to the classroom. Provide peer review for at least one weekly problem solution (other than your own) in the classroom.

Groupwork: Write a control statement for your groupwork Project Document. Indicate how and when the activity results (deliverables) will be measured, timing and content of graphic and written reports, and action to be taken for deviations in the planned schedule and resource loading. Individual Project: Provide a financial analysis for the Information System Plan. Include an estimate of time and resources (e.g. facilities, technology, vendor and employee expenses, etc.) with associated cost. Also, include a break-even analysis, cash flow analysis, and present value analysis. Provide a narrative on methods to be used for control of project activities and costs. Illustrate the material with charts and graphs. Send me a draft for possible recommendations, and (after the recommendations are incorporated) post the project material to the virtual classroom for peer for peer review and grading.

Reading Assignment: Systems Analysis & Design Chapter 18. Search the Internet for websites on object oriented analysis.

Discussion Question: Choose one question from Systems Analysis & Design Review Questions on page 700ff, and develop a complete answer to the question--then submit it to the classroom. Provide peer review for at least one weekly discussion question answer (other than your own) in the classroom.

Homework Problem: Choose one problem from Systems Analysis & Design on page 701ff,and develop a complete solution for the problem including examples and submit it to the classroom. Provide peer review for at least one weekly problem solution (other than your own) in the classroom.

Groupwork: Consolidate material from previous assignments into one groupwork Project Document. Include the names of participants, course, date, document title, statement of work, work breakdown structure, schedule, organizational structure, resource allocation, and control information. Include a table of contents that indicates the location of the previous assignments in the document. Individual Project: Consolidate the previous weekly project assignments into an Information Systems Plan document. Include a title page with student, course and system name. Final Examination: Take the final exam that I have sent to your approved proctor.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "WH".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.
