Course Description:
This course will provide the student with an understanding of the basic theories and techniques of organizational development.  We will focus on practical information regarding the design, management and control of organizational development programs in business, public sector and social services organizations.  3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
To provide students with insight and understanding concerning organizational development and change.  This student-centered course is designed to provide developmental knowledge about theory and practice of planned change.  We will view organizational development as a process for teaching people how to solve problems and learn how to do things better over time.  We will focus on issues related to the human side of organizations.  This course is designed as an instructor-to-student lecture, and an instructor-to-student and student-to-student discussion format. Practical exercises, such as case studies will be introduced to expand upon concepts and current issues. Students will also have to the opportunity to conduct research and articulate their knowledge of the course outcomes through a 10 - 15 page term/research paper in the APA format.

  1. A.  Define the term “organization development” and describe conditions that require organization change and renewal.
  2. B.  Describe organization culture and explain how culture affects the behavior of individuals in organizations.
  3. C.  Describe the stages of organization development.
  4. D.  Identify the ways groups cope with change.
  5. E.  List three ways interpersonal, team, and inter-group techniques contribute to an organizational development program.
  6. F.  Explain how team development is part of an organizational development program
  7. G. Identify three basic organization development intervention techniques.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
All course work must be submitted on the date indicated in the syllabus, to include examinations.  The research paper must be submitted at the end of the last class meeting.  Late submissions will results in the drop of a letter grade for each day submitted after the suspense date.  Suspense dates are those listed in this syllabus.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Park University 2005-2006 Undergraduate Catalog Page 85-87

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "WH".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
