Additional Resources:
In addition, you will need a financial calculator.  It is recommended that you use a Texas Instruments BA II Plus.  This is the model that is used in the textbook examples.  There are other financial calculators that will work (Sharp, HP etc.) however, they will not work exactly the same as the TI.
The text also shows examples of how to solve problems using Excel.  However, it will not be possible to use a computer during the final protored exam.

Course Description:
The role of financial management through the development of a framework appropriate for financial decision making. Emphasis on obtaining and effectively utilizing the funds necessary for the operation of an enterprise. Elements of financial planning, capital budgeting, and consideration of alternative sources of funds. Pre-requisites: AC201 and AC202. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
The facilitator's educational philosophy is one of interactiveness based on lectures, readings, quizzes, dialogues, examinations, internet, web sites and writings. The facilitator will engage each learner in what is referred to as disputatious learning to encourage the lively exploration of ideas and issues.

Class Assessment:
Each student is responsible for:
• completing weekly reading assignments
• completing weekly homework application problems with team
• participating in weekly online discussions with team
• completing three case studies
• competing a midterm examination
• completing a final proctored examination
• Homework Application Problems - A number of application problems will be assigned each week to provide practical applications of financial techniques and methods of analysis. These problems will be selected from the end of chapters in the textbook. The solutions and analyses for these problems should be in detail, not just a reporting of final answers. This assignment is to be posted in the class Dropbox at the end of each week.
• Online Discussion Questions - A number of discussion questions will be posted weekly in a thread titled Discussion. Each student (or team) is required to select a question, develop a complete answer, and post it in the thread.

• NOTE:  All written assignments and online postings in this course will be evaluated by the instructor using the following criteria:  thoroughness, application financial management concepts discussed in the readings, clarity, and creative thinking.

A midterm and a final examination are required and will be based on materials covered in the readings. Specific instructions regarding exams will be posted later in the term.
The final examination will be taken in person during the 8th week of instruction at one of the Park University sites around the country or at an alternative location approved by your Instructor where Park University sites are not available.
It will be the responsibility of the student to arrange for a proctor, by the 6th week of the term. The proctor will be accepted and approved by the instructor. Park University site administrators or adjunct faculty are preferred proctors, but K-12 school teachers, counselors or administrators, certified librarians, testing centers at accredited colleges or universities are acceptable. Approved proctors may also include U.S. Embassy officials, military education officers, or testing control officers at U.S. military bases. Excluded from approval as proctors are family members, relatives, neighbors, friends, clergy, and employers, supervisors and co-workers.
For proctored examinations, photo identification is required at the time of the test. A proctor request form will be made available to you during the first week of class so that you can send your requested proctor to me for approval. Failure to take a final proctored exam will result in an automatic loss of points assigned to the final examination.
Guidelines for selecting an acceptable proctor can be found on the Park University Website.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
No credit for late submission of the weekly discussion assignment.  Late submission of a homework assignment receives a 20% late penalty if no prior extension was granted.

Academic Honesty:
Academic integrity is the foundation of the academic community. Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "WH".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.

Course Ground Rules


As in the classroom, normally the first explanation most students would like is a detailed plan of what is going to happen. Allow me to provide a framework for the next eight weeks.

1.  The classroom is open so you can down load the syllabus and the resource list. You might want to print them so you can use them as a planning document. Then proceed to the conference area and check in. Place an introduction of yourself (week 1 - introduction); feel free to share as much personal information as you feel comfortable with.

2.  Discussion Assignment: You will have a weekly discussion assignment.  Weekly assignments are due by midnight Sunday Eastern Standard Time. These assignments account for 15% of the overall grade. To receive any credit for the online assignment, the assignment must be received by due date.  No exceptions.

3. Homework: Weekly homework assignments will include application problems from the text. If you have a question pertaining to any material in the text either email me or post your question within the weekly Q & A area. All I ask is that you provide the page number and topic and I'll do my best to answer your question. If you are having difficulty with a homework assignment give it your best hour (e.g. attempt) and then send it to me along with a brief statement of what you think the problem is. I will provide assistance. Homework can be sent as attachments in Excel, Word or RTF. 

4. Grading Homework: Weekly assignments are due by midnight Sunday Eastern Standard Time, unless an extension is granted prior to the due date. Assignments that arrive on time will be awarded up to 25 points based on accuracy. Assignments received late will be awarded up to 20 points based on accuracy. All assignments account for 40% of the overall grade. I will provide assistance on the week's homework until Saturday evening.

5. Progress Exam: Course will include two (2) progress exams. The first exam (mid term) will be open book and the final exam will be a proctored closed book exam. The mid turn will be directly emailed to the student at the beginning of week 4 and is due at the end of week 4.  Progress exams account for 45% of your overall grade (scoring breakdown: Mid Term (15%) – Final Exam (30%). To receive full credit for the open book progress exams, the exam must be received by due date.  Late submittal of the mid term exam will result in a 20% scoring penalty. Assignment grade will be 80% of points earned for the assignment. Final exam can not be late.

6. Email communication: Make sure that you identify yourself on all email and attachments. Always extend appropriate courtesy. We owe that to each other; additionally it makes the mail move quicker.

7. Turnaround time on email I am on line several times a day Monday through Friday. It is my goal to provide 24 hour or less response. If you ever send an email to me during the week that does not result in a response from me within 48 hours assume that technology has failed us and resend the email.

8. Course Examination and Proctor Form. The final examination occurs during week eight.  I realize that this is the last requirement for completing the course but it should be accomplished as soon as the form is available online. Final exam must be taken to pass this course, per school policy.

9. Communication:  We must have effective communication for this course to be of maximum benefit to you. Keep me informed and ask me for assistance. I am here to ensure that learning takes place and am willing to do whatever is possible to make that happen.
