Course Description:
Presents various strategies for dealing with conflict in a positive manner.  Emphasizes the development and practice of skills of listening, assertiveness, problem solving, conflict management, and mediation.  3:0:3

My role is to facilitate individual learning through lecturing, discussing, coaching, counseling, interpreting, evaluating, encouraging, and persuading. Discovering ideas, collecting evidence, reasoning logically, and defending theses are essential activities in the students' quest for scholastic achievement. As they pursue academic development, my students will engage this course's content through writing, speaking, reading, researching, analyzing, criticizing and interacting.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate the positive value of conflict.
  2. Examine the types of responses to conflict and understand one's personal responses.
  3. Provide skill training in the positive resolution of daily interpersonal conflicts.
  4. Investigate the concepts of getting to yes and getting past no and the value of win-win outcomes.
  5. Study the relationship of communication skills and group process in building positive conflicts.
  6. Identify the communication behaviors that result in more successful outcomes in conflicts.


Class Assessment:
Assessment of learning will include class participation, exercises, written papers, oral presentations, quizzes, and examinations.

Grading:
Evaluation of your work in accomplishing the following course requirements will carry the weights of the percentages as shown in determining your final grade.

Attendance and Participation: 10%=100 points
Quiz Number One: 5%=50 points
Conflict Description Paper: 10%=100 points
Midterm Examination: 20%=200 points
Quiz Number Two: 5%=50 points
Term Paper: 20%=200 points
Oral Report: 10%=100 points
Final Examination: 20%=200 points
Totals: 100%=1000 points

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Unexcused late homework papers and class reports will lose one letter grade after the deadline and an additional grade each week thereafter. You must complete all assigned work to receive a grade for the course.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
"Faculty members are expected to dismiss from their classrooms students whose behavior is detrimental to good order in the classroom. Such behavior includes, but is not limited to, the use of abusive or obscene language, attending the class under influence of drugs or alcohol, etc. Students who are dismissed from class may be given failing grades, suspension, or expulsion from Park University. Students whose behavior, either verbal or written, is detrimental to the good order of Park University may be subject to disciplinary action ranging from suspension to expulsion from Park University. Students who exhibit abusive or obscene language or behavior toward administrative personnel or support staff are also subject to suspension or expulsion from Park University." Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Park University 2005-2006 Undergraduate Catalog Page 85-87

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "WH".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.

Contact your instructor before or immediately after each absence. If you are absent for some reason beyond your control, such as illness, directed travel, emergency at work, or similar causes, turn in substantiating documentation as soon as possible. Students will receive a deduction in Attendance and Participation points for unexcused absences, lateness, and early departures.
