Course Description:
Current issues and trends in criminal justice with emphasis on group discussion. Each student will be required to prepare, submit and defend a senior thesis. Successful completion of the thesis is mandatory. This course will satisfy the EN306 requirement for Criminal Justice majors. Pre-requisites: EN105, EN106, passing the WCT and senior standing. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
This is an individualized-instruction seminar that requires one-on-one interaction between the student and the instructor.

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Assess the ethical and value questions in the criminal justice system.
  2. Criticize factual situations, applying this knowledge.
  3. Improve the ability to effectively gather, evaluate, and communicate information (in both written and oral forms), including the use of the Internet for communication and research.
  4. Design and construct the research, writing and defense of a thesis.

Core Assessment:

Class Assessment:
Weekly meetings to discuss and analyze the course readings.  A senior thesis is also required.  The thesis must pertain to a topic of interest to the student within the field of criminal justice and must be in APA format.  It is expected that the thesis will comport with the requirements of the rubric below.  Additionally, the student will defend the thesis.


Senior Thesis:  80% of grade

Defense of Senior Thesis:  10% of grade

Participation in seminar discussions:  10% of grade

A=90-100%; B=80-89%; C=70-79%; D=60-69%; F=<60%

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Late submission absent a reasonable excuse will result in a reduction of one letter grade for each day late.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Students should be on time, be properly attired, and must turn off or set to vibrate all cell phones and pagers.

Course Topic/Dates/Assignments:

Week 1 Definitions and Explanations of Crime, Issues 1-4; Submission and approval of thesis prospectus. Week 2 Justice Issues and Contemporary Issues, 5-7 Public Policy. Week 3 Justice Issues and Policy Issues, 8-9 Continued. Week 4 Prison Programs and Alternatives, Issues 10-12.  Week 5  CJ Research, Issues 13-15 Evaluation, and Policy Analysis. Week 6  Future Trends, Issues 16-19; Week 7 Thesis due. Week 8 Thesis defense .

Academic integrity is the foundation of the academic community. Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "W".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
