Course Description:
This capstone course addresses current issues and trends in criminal justice with amphasis on group discussion. Each student will be required to prepare, submit and defend a senior thesis. Successful completion of the theses is mandatory. This course will satisfy the EN306 requirement for Criminal Justice majors.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Assess the ethical and value questions in the criminal justice system.
  2. Criticize factual situations, applying this knowledge.
  3. Improve the ability to effectively gather, evaluate, and communicate information (in both written and oral forms), including the use of the Internet for communication and research.
  4. Design and construct the research, writing and defense of a thesis.

Class Assessment:
The final course grade for the student will be determined  by  class participation,  discussion, research and assigned projects and thesis papers.

Class Participation  10 %

Late Submission of Course Materials:
The instructor will not accept assignments late. Assignments not submitted on the due date will receive a grade of “zero.” All tests must be taken on the dates the class is given the test. Extreme situations may be handled by the instructor on a case-by-case basis. A determination of an “extreme situation” is solely the instructor's.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Cell phones, beepers and other communication devices are not to be used, or on, during class. Disruptive behavior (as determined by the instructor) is unfair to the other students and will not be tolerated. Loud talking, snoring, sleeping, coming late to class or leaving early, except in emergencies, will not be tolerated. Multiple disruptions over a term will lead to the withdrawal of the student from the class by the instructor. The instructor may announce other rules from time to time.
Disabilities: Students with disabilities should contact the instructor as soon as possible, preferably before the term begins.

Academic Honesty:
Academic integrity is the foundation of the academic community. Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "WH".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
