COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is intended to integrate concepts and techniques from the Human Resource curriculum into a framework of applied programs. This course is designed for the advanced student and will give the student an opportunity to investigate and synthesize various concepts of Human Resource Management and to relate them to "real world" situations.

FACULTY'S EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY: My philosophy is one of interactiveness and exploration based on discussion, exercises, case study, video cases and student research.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. Identify strategic choices and considerations in the Human Resource management arena.

2. Analyze the dynamics of the field of Human Resource Management.

3. Analyze human resources requirements of organizations and the related needs for management policies, programs and resources to satisfy those requirements.

4. Examine the issues which impact on the overall functioning of the Human Resources area.

COURSE TEXTBOOK(S): Anthony, Perrewe, and Kacmar. Human Resource Management: A Strategic Approach. 4th edition. The Dryden Press, 2002.

ACADEMIC HONESTY: "Academic Honesty is required of all members of a learning community. Hence, Park will not tolerate cheating or plagiarism on tests, examinations, papers or other course assignments. Students who engage in such dishonesty may be given failing grades or expelled from Park."

PLAGIARISM: "Plagiarism—the appropriation or imitation of the language or ideas of another person and presenting them as one's original work—sometimes occurs through carelessness or ignorance. Students who are uncertain about proper documentation of sources should consult their instructors."


ATTENDANCE POLICY: Instructors are required to keep attendance records and report absences. The instructor may excuse absences for cogent reasons, but missed work must be made up within the term of enrollment. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F". An Incomplete will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance (TA) or Veterans Administration (VA) educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student. Reports of F grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for students receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned above will be reported to the appropriate agency.

LATE SUBMISSION OF COURSE MATERIALS: The case study is due no later than the fifth class meeting. Late case studies will have 10 percentage points deducted for each week past the due date. The research paper is due no later than the last class meeting. Research papers submitted late will not be accepted.

COURSE ASSESSMENT: Readings, discussions/exercises, 3 examinations (format: T/F, multiple choice, essay), case study, video cases, research paper and brief oral presentation.
Research paper - Student will choose a topic of personal interest related to human resource management and prepare a research paper on that topic. Papers should be at least 10 pages in length (typed, double spaced). The 10 pages does not include title page, table of contents, bibliography, illustrations, or the like. Papers should exhibit an acceptable footnoting/bibliographic style. At least 3 current research sources, other than your textbook, should be used and cited (the textbook may be used, but may not be counted as one of your 3 sources). Papers are due no later than the last class session. In addition, each student will briefly discuss/summarize his/her paper for the class.
Case study - Student will complete a study/analysis based on one of the seven cases in the text (pp. 688-867). The case study is due no later than the fifth class meeting (November 15). Additional information regarding the case study will be provided to the student.
