I. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is a study of the family as a social institution and a social group in terms of cross-culture, historical, and contemporary perspectives. Current controversies concerning male-female role, sexual morality, reproduction, and other issues are also considered.

II. GOALS OF THE COURSE

To provide the student with insight and understanding of the human family in the United States and abroad. This course is design to give the student an understanding of the family as a social unit and to discuss patterns of family interaction. We will provide general knowledge regarding current studies and understanding of the human family as a whole.

III. COURSE OBJECTIVES

To familiarize the student with human family life through a series of discussions and examinations on the following learning objectives.

A. Explain the family from a historical point of view

B. Discuss marriage and kinship

C. Discuss courtship systems

D. Describe some patterns of dating and mate selection

E. Discuss issues relating marriage and family life in the United States

F. Identify and discuss marriage and family crisis situations

G. Examine some current issues involving marriage and family

H. Discuss divorce and dissolution marriage bonds

I. Examine, analyze, and evaluate behavior patterns in family units


IV. COURSE ARRANGEMENTS

Lectures, discussions, student presentations, and examinations

V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS

A. Students are responsible for reading all assignments from course textbook.
B. Students are required to be present at all class meetings.
C. Students are required to take all examinations on scheduled dates.
D. Students must complete all course work before a final grade is submitted.
E. The grade of “F” will be recorded for all course work not completed.
F. A letter grade reduction may be given for course work not completed on time.
G. The Instructor will approve all exceptions and deviations from course requirements.

VII. SUPPLEMENTAL RESOURCES MATERIALS

Students will be required to report on a news item of current events or any article from a published work pertaining to marriage and family life.

IX. CLASS POLICIES

Students are expected to attend all classes, be on time, and be prepared to participate. Attendance will be taken at ALL class meetings. Class work missed because of excused absences (illness, TDY, etc.) must be made up. It is the student's responsibility to arrange for makeup work.

Class participation requires taking an active part in ALL class activities and discussions. Participation is expected and will be incorporated in the final grade.

Anticipated Absences: Make arrangements for makeup work prior to absence. TDY orders may be presented to instructor or the Military Residence Center Administrator.

Unanticipated Absences: Arrangements for makeup work MUST be made at the next class meeting. Absences because of emergencies or illness MUST be reported to the instructor at either of the phone numbers listed on the first page of the syllabus.


Two (2) Unexcused Absences will cause a report to be made to the Military Residence Center Administrator. If a third unexcused absence occurs, the student may be dropped from the course.

X. ACADEMIC HONESTY

Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Any occurrence may cause the student(s) involved to be given an immediate "F" and dropped from the course.

XI. GRADING POLICY

A. Examination # 1=50% of final grade
B. Examination # 2=50% of final grade
C. Graduating Senior Project =100% of final grade

Letter grades will be assigned based on the following number grades.
90.00 – 100 = A
80.00 – 89 = B
70.00 – 79 = C
60.00 – 69 = D
