Course Description:
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of programming and  design using multimedia projects. In a “hands-on” class, students will use  pseudocode design and the three programming constructs (sequence,  selection, and repetition) in creating GUI screen interfaces and web pages.  Students will learn how to combine text, graphics, audio, video, and  animation in their projects. 3:0:3

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Create Web pages with basic XHTML.
  2. Construct GUI screen interfaces using a programming language (Visual Basic or comparable language).
  3. Apply problem-solving techniques to develop a solution.
  4. Design projects by describing an algorithm in pseudocode.
  5. Select appropriate programming constructs (sequence, selection, and repetition) for each project
  6. Combine text, graphics, audio, video and animation in multimedia projects

Class Assessment:
Students will be able to track their grade throughout the course.  

Each student is responsible for:

Completing weekly Lab Assignments.

Submitting answers to Weekly Discussion Questions and performing a Peer Review on an answer submitted (other than your own).

Submitting weekly Projects.

Submitting individual and group assignments for the Group Projects.

Completing a Midterm Examination.

Completing a Final Examination.

Grading:
Grading weights are as follows:
Discussion Questions and Peer Review  (300 pts)  5%
Lab Assignments  (600 pts) 20%
Projects  (600 pts) 25%
Group Projects  (600 pts) 20%
Midterm Exam and Final Examination (300 pts and 600 pts) 30%

Course Grading Scale

A = 90 - 100 %        2700 - 3000 points
B = 80 - 89.9%        2400 - 2699 points
C = 70 - 79.9%        2100 - 2399 points
D = 60 - 69.9%        1800 - 2099 points
F = < 60%         < 1800 points

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Submission of Late Work: Each week's work must be completed by the due dates of that week. Assignments received after this time will receive a 10% reduction in your score each day that your assignment is late.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "WH".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.
