Note from Mr. Rodriquez: Welcome to this very interesting class. We will have fun while learning and interacting with each other about racial and discrimination. Please leave your prejudices, biases, and discriminations outside as you enter the classroom.


I. Course description: An examination of the patterns and causes of prejudice and discrimination. Surveys the history and current status of racial and ethnic groups in American society, which have been subjected to discrimination based on race, ethnicity, sex or religion.

II. Goals of the course: To provide the student with a sociological analysis of inter-group processes and a history of racial and ethnic groups in the United States.

III. Learning Objectives: The student will understand the interracial and interethnic relations in the United States that rest on the ideas derived from the social analysis of inter group processes and the history of the interactions of American racial and ethnic groups. The student will also understand that the study of social processes, such as competition, conflict, segregation, stratification, accommodation, fusion, and separation is inherently temporal. Lastly, the student will understand how the interactions of different racial and ethnic are most effectively grasped through an examination of the history of their relationship with one another.

IV. Course Arrangements: Lectures, group discussions, a student written oral report, instructor handouts, and evaluations of student progress.

V. Course Requirements: Students are required to have read Chapter 1 prior to first class meeting. Read all assigned material prior to class and will be prepared to discuss the daily assigned topic(s). Discussion groups will be assigned. Homework assignments will be assessed 5 points for late submission or incomplete assignments turned in. A mid term and final examination will be conducted to cover all chapters. Students will also present a not less than 10 but not more than 15 minute oral presentation that is relevant to this course (see attached). Presentation will be typed, stapled and turned in to the instructor prior to the beginning of the presentations. No exceptions for handwritten assignments turned in.

VII. Supplemental Resources: Daniel Gioseffi; On Prejudice; A Global Perspective, Anchor Books, 1993 is not a requirement to purchase, but excerpts will be discussed to compare the past with today’s time of racial and discrimination.

IX. Class Policies:

Class contribution and participation in lecture and group discussions is expected and will form a part of the final grade. Students are expected to arrive on time to all classes, and be fully prepared for class. Attendance will be taken each class meeting. Classes missed for legitimate reasons, such as illness or temporary active duty, are excusable, however, the student must make up any missed work. Chapters or lectures missed due to absence will be required to be turned in by a two page essay summarizing the chapter or lecture (5 points will be assessed if not turned in). The student is responsible for providing the instructor with justification for an excused absence either prior to or immediately after the absence via email or voice mail. Two unexcused absences are excessive and three (3) consecutive unexcused absences will result in an involuntary withdrawal and a grade of “F” (attendance) will be assigned for the course. Unexcused absences (including any essay not turned in) and tardiness will have an effect of an additional minus 2 points towards the final grade. (student classroom confidentiality during all discussions will be adhered to.)

VIII. Academic Honesty:

Submitting some one else’s work as your own will not be tolerated. If dishonesty occurs or has occurred in any part of the course, the student(s) involved will be given an immediate “F” and dropped from the course. A second violation will result in automatic expulsion from the university. The Assistant Vice President will be notified in writing of the action taken.
