Course Description:
Introduction to the law: contracts, agency, employment, and negotiable instruments; comparison of social responsibility and legal aspects of selected issues. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
One of interactiveness based on lectures, assigned readings, dialogues, examinations, internet research, videos, web sites, written case studies and oral presentations of selected cases. The facilitator will engage each learner in a discussion of legal issues using the Socratic method to encourage the lively exploration of ideas, issues and contradictions.

  2. Demonstrate the ability to brief a case.
  3. Explain the law of contracts.
  4. Define the most common forms of bankruptcy.
  5. Describe the legal construction of partnerships and corporations.
  6. Define the relationship between social responsibility and the law.

Core Assessment:
There is a final exam consisting of 13 True or False questions, 25 Multiple Choice questions and four short answer essay questions.

Class Assessment:
Two case briefs: The csae briefs are a one page(single spaced) typewritten summary of a case of your choosing from the textbook, which will be oresenred in front of the entire class.(See Appendix entitled Reading and Briefing Cases on pages 22 - 24 in text for format and content) Two exams: The mid-term exam will cover assigned chapters up to the date of the exam. The final exam is not comprehensive-it will only cover assigned chapters since the mid-term exam. The mid-term and final exams will consist of true/false, multiple chouce and/or short essay questions. Exams are closed book-text and/or notes are not permitted.There is no extra credit!

Case Briefs: Two: 10 points each. 20 points.Examinations: Two;: 35 points each. 70 points.Class Discussion and Participation; 10 points. Note: Attendance, preparation and completion of in-class problem case assignments will be used to determine the class participation score. Deductions will be taken at my discretion.Total number of points possible 100.Grades will assigned based on the total number of points earned.(See below)90-100 points = A80-89 points = B70-79 points = C60-69 points = D 0-60 points = F

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Late exams: you must contact me and arrange for a make-up if you miss the mid-term. If you take an exam late due to an excused absence, there is no penalty and you can expect to take substantially the same exam as the rest of the class. If you take the exam late due to an unexcused absence, be aware that the make-up may differ significantly. Please be advised that if you miss the final exam you do do not automatically receive an Incomplete. Accordingly, you are advised to consult the current Park University catalog concerning this subject.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Faculty members are expected to dismiss from their classroom students whose behaviors are detrimental to good order in the classroom. Such behaviors include, but are not limited to, use of abusive or obscene language, attending the class under the influence of drugs or alcohol, etc. Students who are dismissed from class may be given a failing grade, suspension, or expulsion from Park University. Students who exhibit abusive or obscene language toward administration personnel or support staff are also subject to suspension from Park University.

Academic Honesty:

Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Park University 2005-2006 Undergraduate Catalog Page 87

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "WH".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
