Course Description:
This course explores and analyzes voice and data communications. It will cover traditional and current telecommunication and computer network systems. Topics include the Open System Interconnection (OSI) 7 Layer Model, Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN), Transmission Control Protocol /Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Ethernet, Frame Relay, and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM).

  Instructor Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain, apply and compare computer networking concepts that include: Circuit-switching vs. packet-switching, residential access networks - point to point, dialup modem, ISDN, ADSL, cable modem, protocol layer stack, client-server and mainframe paradigms, and VoIP vs. the traditional PSTN.
  2. Explain and apply several of these application-layer concepts in depth: TELNET, FTP, SSH, DNS (dynamic and non-dynamic), HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, POP, IMAP, SIP, and H.323.
  3. Explain, apply and compare these transport-layer concepts: UDP and TCP, and Sliding Window.
  4. Explain, apply and compare these network-layer concepts: IP protocol and addressing and Routing algorithms (RIP, OSPF, and etc.).
  5. Explain and apply these link-layer and local area network concepts: ARP, Ethernet, WiFi, and hubs, switches, WiFi APs.
  6. Design a LAN and WAN
Class Assessment:

Six Weekly Assignments: 10% each (60% total)

Two Memos: 5% each (10% total)

Network Project: 10%

Midterm Exam: 10%                            

Final Exam: 10%

Total = 100%

Requirements for each assignment will be given when it is assigned.

Final examination - An examination will be taken in person during the 8th week of instruction at one of the Park University sites around the country or at an alternative location approved by your Instructor where Park University sites are not available.  It will be the responsibility of the student to arrange for a proctor, by the 6th week of the term, who will be accepted and approved by the instructor.  Guidelines for selecting an acceptable proctor can be found at the Park University Website.  For proctored examinations, photo identification is required at the time of the test.  A proctor request form will be made available to you during the first week of class so that you can send your requested proctor to me for approval.  Failure to take a final proctored exam (or submit your final project for some online graduate courses) will result in an automatic "F" grade.  Some Graduate Online courses may not require a proctored Final Examination.


Grading Criteria Each week, you will be given a progress report by your instructor that will let you know if you have successfully met the objectives for that week, or if you need to do further work to meet the objectives. Each assignment will detail the requirements and it is critical that all requirements are met in order to get the maximum score. Failure to meet any of the requirements will yield a deduction in points that will be determined by your instructor.

Plagiarism involves the appropriation of another person's ideas, interpretation, words (even a few), data, statements, illustration or creative work and their presentation as one's own. An offense against plagiarism constitutes a serious academic misconduct. Although offenses against academic integrity can manifest themselves in various ways, the most common forms of offenses are plagiarism and cheating. Plagiarism goes beyond the copying of an entire article. It may include, but is not limited to: copying a section of an article or a chapter from a book, reproduction of an art work, illustration, cartoon, photograph and the like and passing them off as one's own. Copying from the Internet is no less serious an offense than copying from a book or printed article, even when the material is not copyrighted.

Plagiarism also includes borrowing ideas and phrases from, or paraphrasing, someone else's work, published or unpublished, without acknowledging and documenting the source. Acknowledging and documenting the source of an idea or phrase, at the point where it is utilized, is necessary even when the idea or phrase is taken from a speech or conversation with another person.

Attendance Policy:

Professors are required to maintain attendance records and report absences. Excused absences can be granted by the instructor, for medical reasons, school sponsored activities, and employment-related demands, including temporary duty. Students are responsible for any missed work. Absences in excess of four (4) class periods, in a 16-week semester (or 2, in an 8-week term) will be reported to the Director of the individual graduate program, or to the Dean, for appropriate action. Students with such a record of absences, without an approved excuse, may be administratively withdrawn from the class and notified by mail that an "F" will be recorded, unless the student initiates official withdrawal from the class(es).Park University 2006-2007 Graduate Catalog Page 27
