Course Description:
Study of the design, planning and operations and control of manufacturing processes, material management, inventory quality control systems, work measurement and production standards. Pre-requisites: <a href='index.aspx?Class=MA120'>MA120</a>, <a href='index.aspx?Class=FI360'>FI360</a>, <a href='index.aspx?Class=MG352'>MG352</a> or equivalents. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
Welcome to MG375, Production and Operations Management, Online.  My instructional goals for this course are to provide the student with an understanding of the concepts, principles and theories that currently govern the field of Operations Management.  I will consider myself successful upon the successful demonstration of the transfer of conceptual knowledge to that of practical skills through the submission of the students final deliverable product.  Additional support for this objective will come from discussions, Internet, writings, quizzes, and reflective thinking exercises.

Core Assessment:

All Park University courses must include a core assessment that measures the relevant Departmental Learning Outcomes.  The purpose of this assessment is to determine if expectations have been met concerning mastery of learning outcomes across all instructional modalities. The core assessment for this course is a final exam which counts for 20% of the grade. Questions on the final exam will be developed to test at least six of the eight course core objectives.

Assessment of comprehension of the core learning outcomes will be determined throught Examinations, Weekly quizes, comprehensive explainations of discussion questions, Activity based Homework assignements, and a Final project.

Grading:
General Grading Policy: Grades will be given by accumulation of points during the eight weeks of the course. Ground Rules for On-line Participation Students MUST use PIRATE MAIL for private messages, including personal notes to the instructor.  You may post general information and questions for all of the class, and instructor to see in the threaded discussion in my office.  The Class discussion threads are for posting weekly assignments. As with all computer programs, Pirate mail does go offline.  Therefore, If you do not get a response from me within two days to an e-mail then re send it to my home e-mail address: steven.dostroph@pirate.park.edu  or call me at 706.507.4689  between the hours or 0800 -2100.  (Note: I am on Eastern Time). Students are expected to complete at least 6 hours per week in discussion threads, or other appropriate online activities, including sending/receiving e-mail and navigating and conducting research over the World Wide Web. It must be remembered that Principles of Supervision has some controversial topics and as a result will elicit responses from students that may differ considerably from your own. All students will be required to participate in the following weekly online experiences: (A) Homework Assignment: Taken from the week's readings in the text or chapter lecture, a case study from the end of the chapter, and dropped into the homework dropbox basket.  Case studies are tools used to test your comprehension of the core learning outcomes of each chapter.  Every other week, you will provide an analysis of specific case studies. (B) Peer Review: Reply to the posting of at least two other learner.  These replies should offer an alternative point of view, provide critical analysis, or ask thought provoking comments that elicite further discussion.  The goals of the peer review process are to generate discussion to achieve a deeper understanding of a topic, and for students to practice their ability to make a critical assessment, support their arguments while maintaining a professional demeanor.   (C) Discussion Assignment: Discussion statements are taken from the readings in the text for each week; various questions will be posted in the Discussion Statement Thread in the Conference Area for the student's comments; each student will be asked to make an original posting to a Discussion Statement.  These postings should be a complete comprehensive analysis of the topic.  Comprehensive analysis is defined as a review of relevant literature, a synthesis of those ideas into something new.  The posting must be documents with proper citations. (D) Lessons Learned: Weekly throughout the course, I will ask for the Lessons Learned.  Write two or three well-developed paragraphs documenting issues or concerns you experienced or addressed during the period requested.  This is where you will demonstrate your ability to take the concepts and theories of this course and transfer that knowledge into your current work place.  Share with your peers how you plan to transfer the conceptual knowledge into real world application. (E) WWW/URL Research Assignments: Every other week you will provide this forum with an Internet research assignment.  Each student will perform an inquiry about the key topics from the weeks reading and locate a relevant web site that supports the core learning objectives for that particular week.  You will be asked to provide a link to that site (the link must work) and a comprehensive summary of that site. (F)  Self-Check:  You will take weekly self-checking quizes that will ensure that you have mastered the learning objectives for the week.  These self-checks may be taken as many times as required to ensure mastery.  The self checks do not count toward your final formative grade, but only prepare you for the weekly quiz. (G)  Quizes:  You will take weekly chapter quizes.  These quizes will count toward your final formative assessement.  Each quiz is worth 10pts.  You will have one hour to complete the quiz.  Ensure that you save your answers often. (H)  During this course, you will take part in the construction of a fully documented eight page research paper.  This paper will be developed in stages.  The first stage is the topic/thesis identification process.  This process is worth 5 points toward the final paper's score.  The second stage is the rough draft.  The rough draft will be turned in by the end of week 5.  This stage of the process is worth 25 points.  The final stage is the submission of the final work.  The final work is due by Wednesday of week eight.  This stage is worth 35 points.   (I) Periodically, I will have a thread for Hot Topics.  I desire open-ended discussion in this area with you responding outside the norms of Principles of Supervision.  This thread will allow for deeper understanding and appreciation of fellow classmates' viewpoints.

Homework Problem: Choose one problem that does not have a solution submitted yet from Operations Management for Competitive Advantage from pages 684, 709,or 745. Develop a 'one paragraph' solution for the problem including examples and submit it to the classroom. Respond to at least one weekly problem solution (other than your own) in the classroom. Individual Project: Consolidate material from previous assignments into one project plan document. Include the name of author, course, date, project title, statement of work, work breakdown structure, schedule, organizational structure, resource allocation, and project control information. Submit the completed project plan document to the classroom for peer and instructor review. Final Examination: Take the final exam supplied by the instructor to your proctor. Student Opinion Survey: Complete the Student Opinion Survey form at the Park College Distance Education web page. Lessons Learned: After completing all the assignments, then develop a 'one paragraph' comment on individual course activities during the week. Confirm that the final exam has been taken with a proctor and the Student Opinion Survey form has been completed. The paragraph may include topics that are key points, particularly useful items, or any other information that will be beneficial to the class. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "W".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.

General E-mail: When sending e-mail other than assignments, you must identify yourself fully by name and class in the subject line of all e-mail sent to me and/or other members of our class.

Response Policy: I will check my e-mail frequently and respond to course-related questions within 24-48 hours (unless I notify you previously that I will be unavailable).

File Attachments: When files are sent attached to an email, the files should be in Microsoft Word RTF file formats.

Weekly Submitted Material: Each week's work must be completed by the end of that week (Midnight MST on Sunday). Assignments received after this time will receive a 50% reduction in your score. Assignments received more than a week late will not receive any credit.

Online Communication: All your Online communications need to be composed with fairness, honesty and tact. Spelling and grammar are very important in an Online course. What you put into an Online course reflects on your level of professionalism. Use of American Standard English with correct grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and spelling is expected for all material submitted to the online class classroom. The next weeks - for those in this course - will be filled with material of critical importance in business today. We will study current issues and business practices including business reengineering, quality, time-based competition, value-adding processes, electronic commerce and a global perspective. These are all vital to the survival of a firm.

All those directly involved in making products or providing services need this information. Those in entry-level positions need it to determine how to best design, supply, and run processes. Senior operations managers need it for setting the strategic direction of the company. The information is needed by supervisors to decide what technologies should be used. And finally, planners will use this information in deciding the location of facilities. Anyone managing an operation that makes products or provides services will need this material.

This course uses the approach that operations management is a mix of managing people and applying technology to create wealth by efficiently supplying quality goods and services. A cross functional focus is used to view operations management from the accounting, finance, marketing, human resources, purchasing, logistics, and engineering functions of a business.

You will participate in online discussions, homework preparation, peer review of other's materials, interaction on 'lessons learned', and development of an individual project during the course. These will reinforce and expand readings in the text, Operations Management for Competitive Advantage. Each week we will focus on a different segment of the material using the reading, discussion, homework, and a 'lessons learned' paragraph to optimize the learning experience.
