Textbook is Essentials of Oceanography,  eighth edition 2005, authors are Trujillo and Thurman, Prentice Hall. Along with the textbook you need the "Student Lecture Notebook". It may be packaged with the text.
Textbook for the lab part of the class is Laboratory Exercises In Oceanography, third edition, Pipkin, Gorsline, Casey, Dunn, and Schellenberg, 2001, Freeman and Co, NY.

Course Description:
This course will study the complexities of the global oceans. It will examine the physical, chemical, meteorological, biological, and geological aspects of the oceans while evaluating the oceans' role on humans. 3:3:4

5 quizzes, 40 pts. each, 15MC, 5 T - F, 20 pts. written. See schedule under " Course Topics, Dates, Assignments" below.
Written answers to end of chapter questions in text, 3 or 4 for each chapt, to be assigned when we have studied the chapter. This will be homework.
Term paper on relevant topic, details in class, due April 26.
Cooperative work in teams of two, some on web, some on companion website. Two students will work together on practice quizzes, visualization of ocean concepts, vocabulary, or other work. This will be done in the computer room where I will move around and help. Then there will be a short written assignment on what you worked on. We will decide together on how partners are chosen for each session.


Grading will be number of points earned divided by total number possible, expressed as percentage. Each category : quizzes, labs, written answers to text questions, term paper, and group work will count toward the final grade for the course as follows:
quizzes -- 25% of average
written answers to text questions -- 20% of average
term paper --20% of grade
group work -- 15% of average
labs -- 20% of average

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Missing a quiz could give a student an unfair advantage in terms of finding out what was on the quiz, then making it up. For that reason, any makeup will be in the form of a verbal session between the student and myself during my office hours. I will use differently worded questions for our conversation.
For other work, late submission will be dealt with on an individual basis. Written documentation of the reason for being late is required. Anyone can have a run of bad luck and have to turn something in late, and I will cooperate as much as I reasonably can.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

This topic speaks for itself. Common courtesy, common sense, and use of the golden rule are expected. I will show very little leeway in my expectations.

Course Topic/Dates/Assignments:

Our first two meetings will be Jan. 16 and 18. My plan is to get started on classifying and identifying some specific life in the ocean. We will begin with the first part of Ch. 12 in the text, pp. 356 - 364. Exercise 15 in your lab book will be useful here too, pp. 161 - 166. You should read these pages carefully before our first meeting. I plan to put out a number of specimens in the lab where you can come in at specified  times to memorize specific ones for quizzes and the final. These times will tentatively be during the week following each quiz.  We will get all this in place early in the semester.
At our third meeting, Jan 24, we will begin at the beginning of the text and cover the rest of the chapters in sequence. Tentative dates for quizzes will be:

 In each lab session we will normally do one lab from the lab book. You will turn in your "tear - out" sheet from the book for grading. There may be a need to adjust the timing of turning some of them in.

Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "W".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
