Course Description:
Layout and organization of an office, design and control of equipment and  supplies; business information processing systems; human relations; and cost  reduction.  3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
The instructor's educational philosophy is one of interactive communication based on lectures, readings, internet, web sites and examinations. The instructor will engage each learner in what is referred to as disputatious learning to encourage the lively exploration of ideas, issues and contradictions.

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Evaluate the basic concepts and trends in administration office management, including traditional office management practices, emerging elements of management and practices, administrative management resource areas and restructured office systems and training needs.
  2. Explain leadership and communication skills in business environments, including groups, teams and conflict issues.
  3. Critique managing human resources in the office.  These resources include staffing and on-the-job employee practices, as well as work ethics and business etiquette issues.
  4. Explain how to manage computer, telecommunications and office network systems.
  5. Evaluate the concept of connectivity with Internet services and managing distant workers.
  6. Identify the trends and challenges in administrative office management as a result of new technology.

Core Assessment:

The assessment device will be a final paper in which the Core Learning Outcomes are addressed by using the internet to research the most recently published research about issues, products and services that relate to the textbook material.

Class Assessment:
Examinations, paper, presentations and class participation/discussion. The comprehensive final exam is not a take-home exam. The comprehensive final is not an open book,open note exam.


Grades are based and will be computed as follows:

Presentations 50 points = 14% of final grade

Mid-Term 100 points = 27% of final grade

Classroom Participation 20 points = 5% of final grade

Final 100 points = 27% of final grade

Paper 100 points = 27% of final grade - This paper will be used for the core assessment.

The following scale will be used:

A =  333-370 points (90-100%)

B =  296-332 points (80-89%)

C = 259-331 points (70-79%)

D = 222-330 points (60-69%) 

F = 221 and below (59 % or less) or 4+ unexcused absences

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Course assignments submitted after the specified due date will not be accepted unless due to an excused absence and coordinated with and approved by the instructor.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Class participation is expected and will form a part of the final grade. Students are expected to come to all classes. However, legitimate excuses will be accepted. Students are expected to make up all missed work. Two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences are defined as excessive and will result in an administrative withdrawal and a grade of “F” (attendance) for the course.  For any absence (excused or unexcused), student will be required to submit a typed and double spaced paper outlining the chapter(s) missed. The five page paper is due the first class session following the absence.

Academic Honesty:
Academic integrity is the foundation of the academic community. Academic honesty is required of all students at all times.

Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Students who are uncertain about proper documentation of sources should consult with their instructor.

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "W".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
