Course Description:
Consideration of the development, legal environment, and current problems of the industrial relations system.  Emphasis is placed upon the historical evolution of both the union movement and the legislative system that shapes its activities.  3:0:3

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain various perspectives of collective bargaining theories.
  2. Discuss the historical and future trends toward labor and management conflict resolution.
  3. Evaluate how labor relations theories can be applied to workplace practices including the students own work environment.


Core Assessment:

No later than week 14 of a 16 week class or week 7 of an 8 week class the student is to have prepared and submitted supported answers to 8 comprehensive questions in the research assignment.

Class Assessment:

Seven quizes, research project, discussion and lessons learned questions, and final examination.

The comprehensive final is not a take-home test and it will be a closed book and closed notes exam.

For all online courses, the student must pass the final exam with 60% or better to pass the course.

Grading:

Seven quizes - 70 points (19% of total points)

Research project - 150 points (40% of total points)

Final Examination - 100 points (27% of total points)

Discussion questions and Lessons learned - 50 points (14% of total points)

Total points: 370

All final exams will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes.  If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth.  Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Associate Dean.

The Proctored final exam for online courses must be passed with a grade of 60% or higher in order to pass the course regardless of the overall average.  The grade for students who pass the proctored final will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course.  The proctored final exam must address only material which the student has been taught in class.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Late work will not be accepted except for the first week of add/drop.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday 12:01 am MST and Sunday at 11:59 PM MST. The first week begins the first day of the term/semester. Assignments scheduled for completion during a class week should be completed and successfully submitted by the posted due date. Create a back up file of every piece of work you submit for grading. This will ensure that a computer glitch or a glitch in cyberspace won't erase your efforts. When files are sent attached to an email, the files should be in either Microsoft Word, RTF, ASCII, txt, or PDF file formats.

Course Topic/Dates/Assignments:
Discussion questions due Friday of week assigned. Research Project due Sunday Week 6. Quizes are due the week assigned and must be done by Sundays. Lessons learned due Sunday of week assigned, but no earlier than Thursday of the week assigned. Final exam can be done during week 8 and must be done before Sunday of week 8.

Academic integrity is the foundation of the academic community. Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "W".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.
