Course Description:
An introduction to the knowledge and skills of interpersonal communication. The course content includes facilitation of more effective and supportive behavior, reduction of communication barriers and development of increased skill and confidence in relationships. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:

My educational philosophy is one of interactiveness based on lectures, readings, dialogues, examinations, internet, videos, web sites, and writings.  I will engage each student to encourage the lively exploration of ideas, issues, and contradictions. School should be fun not a chore. Anyone who works at it with diligence and courage can learn to think more clearly, accurately, and efficiently and express ideas with clarity and poise.

Core Assessment:

Core Assessment Portfolio:  (20% to 30% of grade)  The Core Assessment Portfolio is a collection of student work.  The portfolio must not be assigned due before the last quarter of the course and should cover at least 8 (75 percent) of the core learning objectives for the course.  It should involve research and emphasize activities associated with the ability to think critically and communicate effectively.  The rubric and core assessment project must be included in all syllabi.  The Core Assessment Portfolio should be transmitted to the instructor in electronic form preferably via email.

Core Assessment Portfolio:

Minimum Requirements:  The core assessment for CA104 Interpersonal Communication will be a portfolio which

-Includes a variety of student assignments designed to show student mastery of at least eight (75 percent) of the core learning objectives for the course. 

-Includes at least one four-page research based paper that utilizes a minimum of three sources. 

-Includes at least one assignment that requires students to analyze their own communication behaviors or the communication behaviors of others.

-Includes at least one assignment that requires students to develop a mini-research project or a media or other creative work illustrating understanding of core concepts.

-Includes at least one assignment that illustrates student understanding of intercultural differences in values and communication.

-Must not be assembled before the last quarter of the course although it may contain work done as the semester progress, such as journals.

-Contains no more than two previously graded assignments.

-Emphasizes activities associated with the ability to think critically and communicate effectively. 

       -Must be transmitted to the instructor in electronic form.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Each week's work must be completed by Midnight EST on Sunday. Homework not turned by the due date, but which is turned in no more then 7 days late, will receive 1/2 the score it would have received otherwise. Homework not received within 7 days of the due date will not be scored. No work received after the last Saturday of the online term will be scored.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

**Computers make writing and revising much easier and more productive.  Students must recognize though that technology can also cause problems.  Printers run out of ink and hard drives crash.  Students must be responsible for planning ahead and meeting deadlines in spite of technology.  Be sure to save copies of your work to disk, hard drive, and print out paper copies for backup purposes.
 
**Active participation in the classroom is a mandatory requirement.  I review and participate in "Discussion" as well as "Just 4 Fun" and "Supplementary" areas. Students are expected to actively participate in the "Discussion" area.   By actively, I mean that you will be awarded points based on your initial post and any subsequent posts illustrating clear interaction with other students.  Your initial response to the discussion question must be thorough and must be posted no later than Wednesday of each week.  You can earn up to 7 points for your answer and you can earn up to an additional 3 points for providing feedback to 3 of your peers throughout the week.   To earn the additional points you must post comments to at least 3 other students per week in the "Discussion" folder.  This requirement is designed to generate further discussion, to offer feedback to class members and to further explore concepts. I will review and assess participation statistics through my gradebook and the eCollege platform.  

**Team Assignment Participation: You will be assigned to a team in week 4 of the course.  Throughout weeks 5-7 you will be required to actively participate in a team discussion area.  Your task will be to discuss the issues and to assess team performance.  Your team will select one person to be the moderator/facilitator.  This person will be responsible for encouraging active participation, focusing on the level of commitment of the team members, fostering team dynamics, assisting with conflict and conflict resolution and providing feedback to the team.  Each team member will be responsible for tracking their own observations as well, and in week 8 will submit a summary of the activity to the dropbox.  Your participation will be monitored by the instructor.  Your initial response to the team discussion question must be thorough and must be posted no later than Wednesday.   You can earn up to 5 points for your answer and you can earn up to an additional 3 points for providing feedback to 3 of your peers throughout the rest of the week.   To earn the additional points, your posts should promote additional thought, offer personal opinion, express concern, pose additional questions, seek clarification, and/or provide clear feedback.

I will provide each student with ongoing progress and feedback reports throughout the term.  Please refer to the grading criteria listed here in assessing point awards and deductions for major course work.   Remember, I work full time and have a family as many of my online students do... I promise to do my VERY best to get homework and feedback back in a timely manner.  My general guideline is as follows:  The week runs from Monday through midnight on Sunday.  You have all week to do your assignments and must submit them to the dropbox no later than midnight Sunday.  I will begin grading assignments as they are posted, but no later than the Monday after Sunday's deadline.  You can expect to see grades posted for the previous week's assignments no later than the middle of the next week.  If more than a week should pass and you do not have a grade posted, please contact me to resolve the matter. 

Course Topic/Dates/Assignments:

Week 1, you will be introduced to the on-line computer conference learning area. You should review the syllabus, assignments, and the course schedule. Your assigned readings will focus on the Universals of Interpersonal Communication, Axioms of Interpersonal Communication and Culture in Interpersonal Communication.

Learning Outcomes Addressed: The student will be able to identify key aspects of interpersonal communication, its elements and basic principles through evaluation and identification of related axioms. Understand the ways in which cultures differ and intercultural communication impacts personal and professional relationships through guided discussion and homework assignments.

Week 2: Unit Overview: These chapters will cover The Self in Interpersonal Communication to include self- concept, self-esteem, and self-disclosure. We will also address Perception and Listening in Interpersonal Communication.

Learning Outcomes Addressed: The student will be begin to understand the "self" in interpersonal communication through assigned readings, self-exploration and activities.

Week 3: Unit Overview: We will now begin Part 2 of the text and our focus turns to Messages: Verbal and Nonverbal. This week’s readings will help the student to understand the significance of verbal and nonverbal messages and will focus specifically on Verbal Messages.

During Week 4, we will continue the discussion on Verbal and Non-verbal messages focusing on Nonverbal Messages and Messages in Conversation.

Week 5: Unit Overview:

Welcome to Part III of the text. In this section, Interpersonal Relationships will be covered in detail. Chapter 10 will address the Universals of Interpersonal Relationships as the student will learn about the stages of interpersonal relationships. Chapter 11 will focus on the Growth and Deterioration of interpersonal relationships.

Prepare and submit your Interpersonal Communication Report Outline. Refer to the instructions in Week 2 and submit your outline via the dropbox.

You DO NOT need to include the full journal entry, just the summary page that indicates the topic and dates that you submitted entries to the journal.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "W".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.
