Course Description:
An introduction to drawing the human figure in action and repose. Gesture, anatomy and the figure in an environment are studied in a range of media. Prerequisite: AR 150. 1:5:3

Educational Philosophy:
My intent in this and any class I teach is to allow my students to become involved and engaged in the world around them.  To do this, students must be willing to listen, learn and be ready to practice what is being offered to them.  Artistic interest and success does not necessarily mean that one has to have inherent abilities to say, draw or paint.  What artistic interest means, to me, is that you are willing to be open to new and exciting ways of expressing yourself through different media and by exploring various art elements.  I also feel that it is extremely important for my students to be interested in Art History. What has been considered "art" and the act of creating a visual record of ones' surroundings began when man became aware of himself as a part of his world. You are a part of your world and what is happening "right now," and because you have chosen this path, you will be a recorder of YOUR world.  I will help you and guide you in being successful in this endeavor. Creating art is a very personal task, one that requires dedication, commitment and a desire to express one's self in way that might not always be apparent to others.  However, in order for any expression to be fulfilling, one must have the tools to get there.  I can allow you to get there with success and grace.

  1. Produce rapid gesture studies of the figure suggesting motion.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of anatomy, the illusion of volume and the fall of light on form in a series of longer figure studies.
  3. Use an expanding repertoire of drawing techniques employing both line and value.
  4. Work in a variety of drawing media including charcoal, graphite, conte and ink.
  5. Critique his/her own drawings and other drawings using professional language.
  6. Work with greater authority with other subjects such as still-life, landscape, portraiture and the use of linear perspective.
  7. Develop stronger compositions through an understanding of the abstract relationships at work in any image regardless of style.
  8. Demonstrate increased ability to see and to draw in a substantial portfolio of drawings.

Class Assessment:
You will be graded on the quality of your drawings and the progress they demonstrate over the course of the semester.  This class combines three different class sections; students enrolled in the higher sections are subject to higher grading standards than students enrolled in AR251. Keep all your work either in a portfolio or in your drawer
You will be required to hand in a body of work that you have chosen approximately 5 times during the session.  The following will apply:
   All work is to be labeled with your name clearly printed on the back
   All work is to have date accomplished and date handed in on the back
   All work is to be handed in with tape removed, without tattered edges
   ONE work within this framework(that is, each 5 hand-ins will have one that will be matted and signed on the front with the signature you intend to use all your art career in pencil (we will discuss this in the first class)

Students in AR 251 will have 4 outside drawing assignments based upon work done in class.  What this means is that you will take 4 of your drawings and create an " enviornment" for your pieces.  I will periodically ask you to present your studies to me for critique. (see due dates) This project can be accomplished in any manner-collage, 3-d, with color-the choices are yours. These will be due the week after Thanksgiving and will be ready for critique at that time.                     
Sketch Book: you will REQUIRED to keep a sketch book.  Included in this syllabus are the assignments and the dates I will collect/and or look at your sketch book. Every dedicated art student keeps a sketch book with them at all times: I want you to do the same and draw all the time, and along with this there will be assigned drawings based upon the human form.

b  Each project will be graded on the following point system:

Late Submission of Course Materials:

  Because this is a STUDIO class, I will not tolerate handing in work that is late because you were absent.  Either you were here or you weren't.  YOU CANNOT ACCOMPLISH THIS CLASS OUTSIDE unless you hire a model.  If you want to spend the money, go right ahead, HOWEVER the 3 cut rule still will stands

1.) Be there.  Be on time.  This is a class of participation.  If you aren’t there I can’t help you.

2.) Tardiness: This class begins promptly at 5:30 At 5:45 the studio will be locked  since only students enrolled in a life drawing class are permitted to be present.  It is very distracting to everyone and inconsiderate to the model for students to keep arriving after the first poses have begun.  If you are late, you’ll have to wait until the first 5 minute break  (probably at 6:30) to be admitted. (And you will be missing the best fast gesture studies). Three tardies equals an absence

3.) Be Prepared.  Have your supplies by the appropriate time and make sure they are with you in class.

4.) Our class, like most art classes in American institutions meet ‘double time.’  For each 3 credit hours 6 hours of class time are scheduled and work outside of class is expected. 

5.) Studio Regulations:  This is a communal studio space There are a lot of people who meet here.  Respect each others space, work and equipment.  CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF.  Take special care of the antique plumbing.  Don't pour paint, plaster or glue down the sink, put it in the trash.

6.) Studio Storage: You may claim a flat file drawer to chare with another student.  Small lockers are available in the sink room and cabinet/drawer lockers are also available.  These must also be shared with another student. Please label your storage clearly with your name and “Spring 06.”  Large Lockers are reserved for the painters.

7.) Art Supplies:  The studio fee you paid at registration is used to partly subsidize  the expense of hiring professional models for this class.  The fee does not provide any art materials.  You are responsible for providing all your art supplies.  A  conservative estimate is 20 sketches/drawings per class  x  30 class sessions = 600 drawings!

8.) Studio Access:  You have 24 hour, 7 day per week acces to this studio space.  You are even welcome to work during other class times.  After add/drop , your name will be placed on the security list for this building.  When you leave, PLEASE, turn off lights and fans (the breaker box is labeled and is behind the door) and shut the windows.  To get in after the building is locked, call security (6444).  Please be prepared to show you Park University I.D. and to cooperate with Park security staff at all times.

9.) Matting your drawings.  A minimum of six drawings (to be specified) are required to be turned  in for critique in hinged matts. You may buy these or make them. A good professional quality matt cutter and table are set up in the classroom next door for your use. Straight and beveled cutters are available  and  blades are provided by the art department.  You must supply your own matt  board, backing boards and hinging tape, however this semester you are LUCKY.  I have been given a ton of matt board and when someone hauls it upstairs, we will have matt board

10.) Studio Safety:  Spray Fixative and spray paints in general, MUST NOT be used anywhere in Alumni Hall.  These products can only be used outside for adequate ventilation.  I recommend the west side of the building.
Although I do not anticipate their use in this class, all solvents must be kept in the bright yellow fire proof cabinet.  Never pour solvents down the drain.  Used solvents are to be disposed of in the special red storage can inside the yellow cabinet.   I do not anticipate their use in this course but using any power tool requires training, goggles AND a buddy.

Information about the safety of art supplies can be found in the large notebook just outside the office and in the reference book with it.

The principle hazard in any studio class is the danger of cutting oneself with an X-acto knife.  ALWAYS USE A STEEL RULER WHEN WORKING WITH AN X-ACTO KNIFE! In the even of an accident use the studio phone to call security (6444) for assistance.



Course Topic/Dates/Assignments:
There will be definitive due dates for all projects, in and out of class.

In-class projects will be kept and placed in a portfolio or your drawer for review during portfolio review at mid-term and at the end of the term.
There will be periodic project "critiques," during the semester. I feel that we all learn from each other and seeing how your class mates interpret a n assignment will help you, in perhaps, problem solving
Out of class projects will be due at the end of the semester, HOWEVER you will be required to present your projects for review on the given dates.

You can earn extra credit by visiting any venue that increases your cultural awareness. This could be an art gallery, an art opening, roller-derby. I don't care as long as you make sketches and write a 1 page reflection paper about your visit. Include qualifying statements. "I liked it BECAUSE, I hated it BECAUSE." This can be worth 5 points per page of drawing(s) and 25 points for the written page. DO IT ANYWAY

Academic Honesty:

Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  3. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  4. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  5. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  6. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  7. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.

My attendance policy:
YOu are allowed 3 only excused absences. That means I know BEFORE that you are not going to make it to class.  I will check my email and I will know when you sent it.  If you have notified me of your absence, you will have one week to make up work missed in class, which means that you will have to do additional work for your 15 missed points per class. This would be in the form of an outside assignment.  You are allowed 3 cuts, however you will NOT be given a chance to make up work or earn addtional points. If you are absent 6 times, your grade will be affected.  I will follow the guidelines of the school in numbers 4 and 5 above. PLEASE DO NOT TEST ME ON THIS......
