Course Description:
Students will be introduced to the various components that make up the major building systems: the structural systems, the building envelope, and Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing systems, with an emphasis on methods and materials of residential and commercial construction, and the interface between furniture systems and interior products with building systems. Students will learn to apply the construction specifications institute method for organizing drawings, specifications and architectural materials libraries. 3:0:3.

Educational Philosophy:

The instructor’s educational philosophy is that of interaction, holistic learning, and practical application. Lectures, readings, and class discussion will provide most of the learning material and will be supported by special projects, study of actual field conditions, videos, quizzes and tests, etc. Overall (generalized) emphasis will be placed on the practical relationships between this subject and professional practice as well as this subject and the entire curriculum.

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify the major systems of a building and their components and discuss the interrelatedness of their functions.
  2. Describe graphically and verbally the fundamentals of building construction including structural elements, environmental systems and building envelope.
  3. Identify the components of a building that are the responsibility of the interior designer and demonstrate the connection between these elements and the overall building design.
  4. Organize drawings according to CSI format, prepare a specification, and organize a design resource library.

·        Presentation of reports on site visits and field trips (outcomes 1-3)


·        Completion of core assessment project: a research project on building construction that includes detail drawings. (outcomes 1-4)*

Grading:

Each assignment, quiz, exam, or other special project will be assigned a specific number of points at the time you receive the assignment; the larger and more important assignments will be worth more points than the short ones. Grades will be easily tracked throughout the semester by simply dividing the number of points achieved by the total number of points available to date. In addition, class participation will be a small part of your grade. 

       A: 90% and above

       B: 80% to 89%

       C: 70% to 79%

       D: 60% to 69%

       F: Below 60%

Late Submission of Course Materials:

All assignments are due at the beginning of class unless described otherwise by your instructor. Assignments turned in late will lose 10% for each of the first two scheduled class meetings after the assigment is due; if the assigment is not turned in within two class meetings after the assignment is due, it will receive a 0%.  Students missing class due to participation in athletic or other school-sponsored events must turn in all homework prior to their absence.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

Class attendance is required.  An attendance sheet will be passed around at the beginning of each class while announcements are being made.  It is the student's responsibility to sign th attendance sheet at this time.  Students who do not sign the attendance sheet, but arrive after it is distributed, will be considered late.  Three late arrivals will equal one absence.
In case of illness or emergency, the instructor must be notified prior to class by e-mail message.  Each student will be allowed three absences, which, if proper notification is sent, will be recorded as "excused".  Thus each of the following will result in a 5% deduction from the final grade:
1. Three "tardies" equalling one unexcused abcence.
2. Any absence that is not escused by written (e-mail) notification.
3. The fourth and each subsequent absence, regardless of excuse.

This instructor will strive to make this course informal and comfortable. In return, respect for (and attention to) the instructor and other students is absolutely required. Disruption to the class can not be tolerated.

Students are responsible for acquiring all materials and information missed during a class session from another student.

Computers make writing and revising much easier and more productive. Students must recognize, however, that technology also has limitations. Printers run out of ink and hard drive crash. Students must be responsible for planning ahead and meeting deadlines in spite of such issues. Be sure to save copies of your work to disk, hard drive, and print out paper copies for backup purposes.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  3. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  4. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  5. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  6. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  7. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
