1. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course focuses on the developmental tasks and psycho-social services during the adult years with special emphasis placed on the social psychology of aging.

2. GOALS OF THE COURSE: The Fall I term dates for this class are 2 August through 26 September, 2004. In this course, we will examine developmental issues facing middle-aged and older adults. Special emphasis will be placed upon older adulthood and elements of human diversity, including ethnicity, race (particularly race as a social construct), gender, cohort, religion, spirituality, social dimensions, and place of residence. Through active learning strategies, we will devote our efforts to the following topics: (a) an introduction to adult development and aging; (b) changing American demographics; (c) social and cultural diversity; (d) physiological and sensory processes; (e) adaptation and coping; (f) mental health and interventions; (g) physical health; (h) memory, attention, and learning; (i) intelligence and creativity; (j) cognitive stages, wisdom, and expertise; (k) personality development; (j) relationships and sexuality; (k) work, leisure, and retirement; and (l)Death and grieving.

3. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
• Discuss issues in adult development and aging based upon elements of social and cultural diversity.
• Demonstrate an increased awareness of societal and personal stereotypes regarding aging and older adults.
• Critically evaluate concepts, theories, and research on adult development and aging from different perspectives.
• Understand the developmental tasks and psycho-social services during the adult years with special emphasis on the developmental and social psychology of aging.

5. COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Reading assignments - Students will be expected to read the entire textbook, the articles displayed for each week, and other assigned material.
Class participation and Attendance - Each week, students will complete learning activities found in the textbook, and they will discuss their responses to those activities during class time. (10%)
Chapter briefing - Students will be assigned a chapter from the textbook to present orally to the class. (10%)
Homework assignments - Students will complete advance homework assignments based on the textbook readings to be turned in prior to discussing those chapters. These will serve as the basis for exams.
Projects (2) – Students will complete two outside projects:
(1) Personal Interview with an elderly person receiving social security and/or other fixed income. Specific questions will be addressed during the interview. A written synopsis will be due by the end of the 4th week of class. It is worth 15% of the total grade.
(2) Visitation to a community agency that provides services to the elderly. Specific questions will be addressed during the visit. A written synopsis of the visit will be due by the 8th week of class. It is worth 15% of the total grade.
Midterm and final exams - There will be two major exams. The midterm is due during the fourth week. The final exam will be given during the eighth week. The midterm is worth 25% of the total grade, and the final is worth the same percentage (25%).

**NOTE: Instructor reserves the right to modify any of the above as time or circumstances may require.

9. CLASS POLICIES:
1. I reserve the right to drop any student for 3 days’ unexcused absences, disruptive
behavior or failure to do assigned work.
2. Academic honesty is imperative. Copying, from another student’s work or from
your works cited, without proper documentation will result in an F.
3. Student names will be reported to the main office after two consecutive
unexcused absences.
4. Prior arrangements must be made with the instructor for any extended absences
anticipated and all missed work must be made up.
5. Late submission of required assignments will result in points being deducted from
your grade.

10. GRADING POLICY:
A 90-100
B 80-89
C 70-79
D 60-69
F 59 or BELOW

Class Participation = 10%
Research Projects (2) = 15% each (30% total)
Chapter Briefing = 10%
Mid-Term Examination = 25%
Final Examination = 25%
