Educational Philosophy: Instructor Newman’s educational philosophy is based on using a variety of methods in learning, focusing on the interactive. Lectures, readings, quizzes, group work, class discussion, examinations, writing, and use of the Internet are significant components of this learning process. Students will be required to analyze, criticize, and synthesize information learned. Students are encouraged to participate in the lively exploration of ideas, issues, and contradictions.

Students will be required to complete all assignments. Since we will ALL be sharing our educational and work life experiences during this learning process, class attendance and participation are absolutely essential. Reading, written current event reports, and oral presentation assignments will be the launching point of many class activities. Satisfactory participation in this class may prove difficult if you have not completed the required reading assignments.
You will complete various oral presentations throughout the class. You will be giving presentations on current events, assigned topics and topics of your choosing. Some assignments will be individual and others will be group assignments. Groups will be arranged on the first evening of class and details will be reviewed regarding various assignments.
You will be providing two current event oral assignments. These will be a review of one or more articles that you feel is relevant to the discussion taking place that evening. Appropriate communication skills are a necessity for success in the business world. You may utilize a variety of business resources such as newspapers, trade magazines, Internet, etc. Please bring a copy of the article(s) to class. Articles should be no older than 1 year and can be about any human resource topic of your choice. Use your professional experiences to add insight in explaining the theory, topic or concept being explored. Be sure to answer the “So what?” question and explain what value this adds to you as a businessperson. Two to three minute
oral reviews will be given in class on each current event.
Each student is responsible for facilitating discussions of various Human Resource topics. Various assignments will be given throughout the semester.

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.
All final exams in all School of Business and Management courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business and Management.
The instructor will not accept assignments late. Assignments not submitted on the due date will receive a grade of “zero”.
Classroom Rules of Conduct:
1. Instructor is not responsible for contacting absent students or providing items from missed classes.
2. Be prepared for class. This course will consist of class discussion, small group discussion, group work, and lecture. You are expected to take part in the discussions and group work. Your in-class participation is evident in your grades through the oral presentations, group discussions, etc.
3. No makeup assignments will be given unless the student produces a written excuse signed by a doctor (with the doctor’s registration number) in the case of illness, or a tow bill from a tow company in the case of car problems. A written excuse from the campus nurse is acceptable. The same requirement applies to illness of children.
4. Computers make writing and revising much easier and more productive. Students must recognize though that technology can also cause problems. Printers run out of ink and hard drive crash. Students must be responsible for planning ahead and meeting deadlines in spite of technology. Be sure to save copies of your work to disk, hard drive, and print out paper copies for backup purposes.
5. No late assignments are accepted for any reason without the written excuses designated in #3. Excused absences producing late assignments received more than 1 week from due date are given a 0.
6. Attendance is taken at the beginning and end of class. You must be present at both at both times and have actively participated to receive the participation points in full for the evening.
7. Extra credit may be given equally to all students at the discretion of the instructor. Do not count on extra credit for your grade.

Plagiarism:Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing.
