Course Description:
This basic course provides an examination of the nature and extent of crime and theories of crime causation, as well as the societal reaction to criminal behavior will be covered in this class. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:

The facilitator's educational philosophy is one of interactiveness based on lectures, readings, case studies, research, videos, quizzes, discussions, and examinations. The facilitator strives to encourage each students to explore new ideas in a friendly, relaxed environment conducive to communication and participation.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify and analyze the causes and theories of crime and criminal activities.
  2. Recognize the historical foundations of the study of criminal behavior.
  3. Examine ways in which society today deals with criminal behavior and its efforts at preventing and punishing criminal behavior.


Core Assessment:

For CJ200, all students will complete an essay, 6-8 pages (1,500 to 2,000 words) in length (excluding the cover sheet and bibliography pages) which compares and contrasts two of the theories of crime and criminal activity discussed in the course. You are free to select the theories you wish to examine. It is also acceptable to compare or contrast theories from different disciplines. In other words, you may choose to compare one of the sociological theories with a similar perspective in the psychological theories. Your essay should consider the historical foundations of the study of criminal behavior; and examine ways in which society responds to criminal behavior in terms of prevention and punishment. The paper should be written in APA format and have at least four sources, three of which should be sources not covered in the course. The essay should contain a title page, an outline, and a bibliography.

Class Assessment:

There will be a mid-term and final examination. Additionally, each student will be required to complete a research paper (core assessment) and a concise three to four page summarization of the class (group) research exercise.  Detailed information about the projects will be discussed in class. Additional class work may also be assigned as deemed necessary. Attendance will be a factor when assessing final course grade.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Late work will be one letter grade for each day it is late.
Examination missed as a result of an excused absence can be rescheduled one week after the regularly scheduled exam date.
Examination missed as a result of an unexcused absence will be recorded as an "F".
 

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

This is NOT an on-line course. Therefore students who cannot COMMIT to attending this class as SCHEDULED should not enroll. Students are expected to attend class on time and to remain for the entire period. Continuous tardiness will impact attendance grade. Leaving class early must be approved by the facilitator in order to receive attendance credit. Students must realize that due to the compressed class schedule, class time is critically important. Continued tardiness of thirty minutes or more will be cause for marking the student absent for the class period. Determination of what is an excused or unexcused absence remains with the discretion of the facilitator as per Park University policies ( see below). Students who miss the first class session are advised that IMPORTANT INFORMATION about the class format, syllabus, textbook, exams, and projects will be not be repeated. It will be their responsibility to become familiar with this information on their own. As a class, we do not have the luxury of time for un-necessary repetition. Students who are disruptive, abusive, rude, or unruly towards any student, guest, or faculty will be removed from the class. Disruptive and rude behavior includes doing homework in class, reading a book or newspaper, sleeping, continuously leaving class to answer cell phone. Prohibited conduct is also cause for dismissal from the class. Such conduct includes plagiarism and dishonesty ( in any manner or degree). Both will not be tolerated.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "W".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
