Course Description:
A development of the ability to speak clearly and express ideas effectively before an audience.  Students plan, compose, and deliver various kinds of speeches and talks.   Principles of effective rhetorical presentation are related to basic purposes and forms of public speech-communication.   3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
My philosophy is one of interactiveness based on lectures,reading, dialogues, examinations, videos, guess speakers, and handouts.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate your understanding of basic communication principles, the vocabulary of speech communication, and models of communication.

2. Understand the responsibility of speakers and listeners

3. Select and limit speech topics that are appropriate for you, your audience, and the occasion.

4. Analyze classroom audience and any other audience before you speak.

5. Demonstrate your understanding of the parts of a speech and how to arrange your ideas.

6. Identify, select, and use effective supporting material in a speech.

7. Word your ideas accurately and vividly

8. Speak more confidently in a public speaking situation

9. Display improved critial listening ability and offer reasoned criticism of speeches you hear.

Course Assessment:
Students must read all material prior to the next schedule class. Each student will be required to present in front of the class 2 speeches. The speeches are Informing 5 – 7 minutes and Persuading 7 – 9 minutes. Each speech will be timed and 10 points will be deducted for going over or under your time. Each student will build a complete outline for each speech and each outline must be done in the same manor as the example given. It will be graded along with the speech on the same day. Students will sign up for speech dates of their choosing and no students will be allowed to give two speeches on the same night of class. If a student later decides to change his or her speech date, 5 points will be deducted.

Students will received  two take home exams. Assignments that are late will have 15 points deducted. Failure to give a speech could result in failure of the class.

GRADING PLAN:
190 – 210 = A                       Attendance= 10
150 – 189 = B                       Speeches/Outline 2= 50
120 – 149 = C                       Mid-term =  75
100 – 119 = D                       Final = 75
99 below =  F

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Late assignments will receive a minus 10, and late  exams will receive minus 15.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
NO FOOD ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM. Turn off your cell phones. Students are required to exerise courteous behavior between other students and the instructor.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing.

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "WH".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
