Course Description:
A study of the basic principles of cost accounting applied to manufacturing, merchandising, and service businesses. Emphasis is on various accepted cost methods such as a job order, process, and standard cost system.

Educational Philosophy:
To be able to fully understand the concepts managers need to make crucial business decisions, it is critical that students use a hands on approach to learning in this course.  Students must experience problem solving techniques, concept applications to real situations and preparation and presentation of accounting information relative to the issue.  Homework assignments from the text or other source in the forms of cases, questions and exercises will give students practical applications of the learned concepts.  When students take an active role and make every effort to to complete assignments each will remember the learning ideas.

  4. Using various inventory methods, journalize manufacturing financial transactions.

Core Assessment:

The test examines each learning outcome with 20 questions. Eighteen multiple-choice questions will be based upon a distribution of critical thinking concepts applied to a learning outcome. Two questions will examine a communication/writing component. Each question will be weighted as 5 points.

Class Assessment:

Examinations, homework assignments, oral presentations and written position statements based on business analysis are all part of the assessment tools.

Grading:

2 Examinations 100 points each, will be assessed at 30% of final grade
Homework assignments 15 points each, class total 240 points will be assessed at 25% total grade 
Class participation and attendance 10 points each, class total 160 points will be assessed at 15%
Oral presentation/written opinions  25 points each, total 50 points will be assessed at 10% total grade
Team Activities   100 points, will be assessed at 20% total grade

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business and Management courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business and Management.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Homework submitted late must have permission of the instructor for late submission or 50% of the points will be deducted.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

Students are expected to come to class prepared to discuss the assignment for the class. 
Each student is expected to participate fully in class discussion. 
Everyone will treat others in the class with respect and courtesy
All team members are expected to fully participate in the assigned activity to the team.

Course Topic/Dates/Assignments:

At the first class session specific assignments will be made for homework requirements per class.  Teams will be structured  and assignments made to each team and its presentation date.  Opinion and written documents will also be assigned.
On the first night of class Jan 15,  be prepared to review the syllabus and discuss chapter 1.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  3. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  4. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  5. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  6. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  7. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
