Course Description:
Introduction to the law: bankruptcy,partnerships, property and corporations; comparison of social responsibility and legal aspect of selected issues. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
The facilitator's philosophy is one of interactiveness based on a class discussion of cases, legal concepts and words and phrases appearing in the course text book together with debate, lectures and written examinations relating thereto. The facilitator will engage each learner in disputatious learning to encourage the lively exploration of ideas, issues and contradictions in the law as expressed in selected Court decisions found in the course text book and related hypothetical situations.

Core Assessment:
All Park University courses must include a core assessment that measures the course's Core Learning Outcomes. The purpose of this assessment is to determine if expectations have been met concerning mastery of learning outcomes across all instructional modalities. 

 For this course, the core assessment is a Comprehensive Final Examination to be administered in all sections of MG 261. This exam is worth at least 30 percent of the student's final grade and will test students' mastery of the Core Learning Outcomes (as listed on this syllabus) through definitions, essay, and/or multiple choice questions. 

 This core assessment is a CLOSED BOOK, CLOSED NOTES comprehensive examination that must be administered and proctored in the classroom and is not to be given as a take-home examination. Students should not have access to the exam or its questions before it is administered. The duration of the exam can be no longer than two hours. 

 No computers, or materials other than a writing instrument and a calculator without text functions and communication may be used for the exam; this applies to all students, regardless of whether the exam is for on-line or face-to-face students. Completion of the exam is strictly individual; students may not work in groups to complete the exam.

Class Assessment:

There is a final exam consisting of 13 True or False questions, 25 Multiple Choice questions and four short answer essay questions. The comprehensive final examination, as set forth above, is not a take-home test. The comprehensive final is a closed book, closed notes examination. The final exam will have 100 points consisting of the following grading criteria: each of the 13 True/False questions will have a value of two (2) points for a total of 26 points or 26% of the total; each of the 25 multiple choice questions will have a value of two (2) points for a total of 50 points or 50% of the the total; each of the four (4) essay questions will have a value of up to six (6) points for a total of 24 points or 24% of the total. In addition to the final examination, there will be two (2) written examinations, as set forth on the within class schedule, each worth 100 points; each interim examination consists of twenty five (25) true-false questions each question having a value of two (2) points for a total of 50 points or 50% of the total and twenty five (25) multiple choice questions each question having a value of two (2) points or 50% of the total.   
The final exam will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes.  Calculators are not allowed.  Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Associate Dean.

Grading:
Each written examination, including the final examination, will have one hundred (100) points for a total of three hundred (300) points. Additionally, one (1) optional extra credit assignment will be offered for  up to eight (8) points. Extra credit papers must be submitted prior to the end of the semester. You will be graded on your performance on the the two (2) interim examinations and the final examination and the optional extra credit. Your score will be combined and divided by three (3). Your score may be adjusted based on your class attendance, but not by more than ten (10) points. Letter grades are based on the following: A=100-90, B=89-80, C=79-70, D=69-60, F=59 and below.  

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business and Management courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business and Management.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
As the law is a complex subject, your attendance and classroom participation is critical if you are to do well in this class. You should be aware that given the amount of material and the pace of this class, missing even one lecture period is significant. Lecture material, except for a brief review at the beginning of the next following class, is not repeated and it is your responsibility to make up any work. You are expected to read and brief each case in the assigned chapters prior to class. You will be selected randomly to present a case to the class during each class period followed by a discussion and hypotheticals. Since there are sedveral cases in each assigned chapter, you may have more than one (1) opportunity to present a case during each class period. Your attendance and particpation may be used positively or negatively to impact your final grade, but not by more than ten (10) points as set forth above.

Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  3. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  4. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  5. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  6. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  7. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
