Course Description:
This basic course provides an examination of the nature and extent of crime and theories of crime causation, as well as the societal reaction to criminal behavior will be covered in this class. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:

This instructor's educational philosophy is one of interacting with the students.  Lectures, reading assignments, Chapter Review Exercises, dialogues, section examinations, videos and a research writing paper will be required.  This instructor will engage each learner in what is referred to as disputatious learning to encourage the lively exploration of ideas to include current issues and contradictions.

  1. Identify and analyze the causes and theories of crime and criminal activities.
  2. Recognize the historical foundations of the study of criminal behavior.
  3. Examine ways in which society today deals with criminal behavior and its efforts at preventing and punishing criminal behavior.


Core Assessment:

For CJ200, all students will complete an essay, 6-8 pages (1,500 to 2,000 words) in length (excluding the cover sheet and bibliography pages) which compares and contrasts two of the theories of crime and criminal activity discussed in the course. You are free to select the theories you wish to examine. It is also acceptable to compare or contrast theories from different disciplines. In other words, you may choose to compare one of the sociological theories with a similar perspective in the psychological theories. Your essay should consider the historical foundations of the study of criminal behavior; and examine ways in which society responds to criminal behavior in terms of prevention and punishment. The paper should be written in APA format and have at least four sources, three of which should be sources not covered in the course. The essay should contain a title page, an outline, and a bibliography.

Class Assessment:

Chapter Review exercises will be included.  Three section examinations covering approximately 5 to 7 Chapters will be given an intervals.  A research paper as noted in the core assessment will be due at the end of the semester.

Grading:

  GRADING PLAN:   Students are required to meet the minimal standards set for a formal class of this standing. I.e. the minimal score of 70% on a 100 point scale. The following is a breakdown on grading procedures:

 Section 3 Examination                           20% of your final grade
 CORE ASSESSMENT                        40% of your final grade

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Late submission of the research paper will cause a reduction of one letter grade.
Section examinations not take on time will also be reducted in overall score by one letter grade.
 

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

Classroom Rules of Conduct will be discussed on the first night of class.  Expectations concerning participation and facility regulations will also be covered.  This instructor expects that each individual in this class will treat each other with dignity and respect.  Discussions and interactions are expected to gleen differences of opinions.  However, respect for others opinions will be foremost in all learners agenda.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "W".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
