Course Description:
An introduction to the religion of humankind from the earliest records of spiritual life to the great religions of today. The course recognizes the possibilities of dialogue among the living traditions around the world and the resources within the local community. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:

The instructor’s educational philosophy is based both on interaction between instructor and student and peer interaction.  Methods of fostering and enhancing interaction will include instructor-led discussion, readings, student presentations, debate, quizzes, examinations, film and music, and computer technology.  Each student will be challenged to develop critical thinking skills regarding the exploration of issues and concepts.

  1. 1. Upon completion of this course, the successful student will be able to identify and list world religions
  2. 2. Describe how each religion makes sense of its place in the universe.
  3. 3. Compare and contrast religions studied and be able to analyze new religions encountered.
  4. 4. Apply the principles of critical thinking regarding the historical development and belief structure of world religions.
Class Assessment:

Assessment of learning will be determined by using the following:

1.   Quizzes: Both announced and unannounced quizzes on material will be administered.

2.  Mid-term and Final Exams: Students will complete two examinations.

3.   Research Paper and Presentations: A topic is to be chosen, research material gathered, and a paper formulated. Research material should contain no more than one internet source.  A minimum of 3 academic references must be used and cited. Select a topic within the scope of World Religions. Use your book as a reference to choose an appropriate topic. Your topic must be approved by the instructor.

The body of the paper should be 4-5 pages in length. Direct quotes in any format are not allowed. You must use APA 5th edition or the current version of MLA for your formatting. Margins should be 1" and the entire paper should be double-spaced. You should use the first paragraph to introduce the topic to the reader and to introduce the main points of the paper. The main points of the paper will include the main topics of the research articles you have conducted. Then you will move through to analyze and summarize each of the main topics and key points of your paper.  Transition sentences should be used to tie one point to the next. A final concluding paragraph should be included at the end. You should avoid personal pronouns in writing. Also, you should not site someone that the author of the article you are reading cited, unless you read that source personally. The paper is due both electronically and in paper by the due date. Electronic papers will be submitted to a plagiarism tool.

The paper will be graded to include: grammar, flow of thought, transitions, content, and format. Other factors may be considered in the grading of this paper. If you have any questions while completing this assignment, it is the student's responsibility to contact the instructor to have the question answered. A minimum of three academic reference sources, in addition to the text, should be utilized. Students will present their paper to the class. Guidelines: APA or MLA format, 4-5 pages of body text, 1" margins, double space, header, title page, reference page (Grading criteria: format/references-10, grammar-10, introduction-5, transitions and flow of thought-5, conclusion-10, key point summaries-50, presentation-10)


The final course grade will be determined by the following measurements:

3. Midterm and Final Examination 35 points each

4. Research Paper 20 points

Total 100 points


Final course grading scale:

90-100  = A

80-89  = B

70-79 = C

60-69  = D

59 and below = F

Late Submission of Course Materials:

If an assignment is due on a night that the student is not present, it is the student's responsibility to get the assignment to the instructor on the due date. Five points will be deducted each day an assignment is late. Assignments will not be accepted after three dates of the due date without prior approval from the instructor.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

·        Class participation is expected and will form a part of the final grade.

·        Students are expected to attend all classes and be on time.

·        Students are required to read all material assigned prior to class and apply the material during class discussions, activities, and exercises.

·        The student is responsible for providing the instructor with justification for an excused absence, either prior to or immediately after the absence.

·        Computers are now an integral part of our educational experience.

·        Students must be responsible for planning ahead and meeting deadlines.

·        Students will conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.

·        Students are expected to respect other students' opinions and values, even if they disagree with those opinions and values.

Academic Honesty:
Academic integrity is the foundation of the academic community. Because each student has the primary responsibility for being academically honest, students are advised to read and understand all sections of this policy relating to standards of conduct and academic life.   Park University 2006-2007 Undergraduate Catalog Page 87-89
Academic dishonesty includes committing or the attempt to commit cheating, plagiarism, falsifying academic records, and other acts intentionally designed to provide unfair advantage to the student.• Cheating includes, but not limited to, intentionally giving or receiving unauthorized aid or notes on examinations, papers, laboratory reports, exercises, projects, or class assignments which are intended to be individually completed. Cheating also includes the unauthorized copying of tests or any other deceit or fraud related to the student's academic conduct.

Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. • Falsifying academic records includes, but is not limited to, altering grades or other academic records.
• Other acts include:
o Stealing, manipulating, or interfering with an academic work of another student or faculty member
o Collusion with other students on work to be completed by one student
o Lying to or deceiving a faculty member.

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "W".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
