Course Description:
PH 101 Introduction to Philosophical Thinking (GE) An entry into philosophy by two routes an exploration of philosophical problems through reading and discussing selections from the great thinkers or a lecture-discussion survey of philosophy conceived in the broadest fashion. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:
The instructor's educational philosophy is based on interactive, disputateous learning, i.e. it will engage the student in analytical, appreciative study of the  course material for philosophy literally means "the love of wisdom".  This will be done via lectures, assigned readings and discussions thereof, quizzes, examinations, classroom and group activities, term papers presented in writing and orally, research, etcetera    

  Instructor Learning Outcomes

  1. 1. Define, and articulate, the various philosophies studied.
  2. 2. Analyze, and explain, said philosophies relating them to the respective student's own philosophy.
  3. 3. Enable the student to understand, and respect, the many philosophies existent in our multinational/multicultural world today.
  4. 4. Utilize the above to apprecaite the impact of philosophy on his/her life and be enriched thereby.
Class Assessment:
This assessment is based on the following:
1. Attendence
2. Class participation
3. Homework
4. Projects
5. Quizes
6. Examinations
7. Perparation of a paper, using MLA format, on a topic relating to philosophy.  The topic is selected by the student and approved by the Professor. The paper's length may vary according to the topic chosen but eight to ten pages is an approximate length.  Each paper must have a bibliography/works cited of at least five items of which three must be books. Be careful to verify the veracity of any internet sources used.  A brief oral sharing with the class of the paper's content is required so that everyone in the class may benefit from each other's work. If anyone has great difficulty with the oral presentation or has reason to be excused from same, please speak with the Professor thereon.

Grading:
Grades will be based on the following:

Letter grades for the course will be calculated as follows:
93 % above......................................A
80-92...........................................B
70-79...........................................C
60-69...........................................D
Below 60 .......................................F

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Submission of late homework, or papers, must be turned in at the next class meeting unless other arangements are made with the Professor. Students must talk with the Professor about these arrangements.  Classes missed for legitimate reasons such as illness, temporary duty, etcetera, are excusable; however the student is responsible for making up the work missed.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
 If a student will be misssing a class due to legitimate reasons (See LATE SUBMISSION OF COURSE MATERIAL for details thereon.), plans must be made for assignments, etcetera.  If a student knows that a late arrival in class may occur occasionally, let the Professor know as arriving late to class can be both disruptive and rude.  Cellular phones and pagers are normally not to be turned on in the classroom but students on call for duty may put theirs on silent mode.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
