Course Description:
This capstone course addresses current issues and trends in criminal justice with emphasis on group discussion. Each student will be required to prepare, submit and defend a senior thesis. Successful completion of the thesis is mandatory. This course will satisfy the EN 306 requirement for Criminal Justice majors. PREREQUISITES: EN 105, EN 106, passing the WCT and senior standing. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:

The course will have discussions and assignments each week, all with the goal of helping you complete the senior project, your senior thesis.  There will be lectures available on how to construct each part of your thesis and our discussion will support these weekly assignments.  Each week you will have a portion of your thesis due--please place this in the drop box provided. I will encourage discussion, and will interact solely to encourage your interaction with each other.  You are encouraged to interact with your peers and ask their help in working through issues--some of your assigments will require this!

  3. Improve the ability to effectively gather, evaluate, and communicate information (in both written and oral forms), including the use of the Internet for communication and research.
  4. Design and construct the research, writing and defense of a thesis.

Class Assessment:

You will have minor writing assignments due each week, all with goal of helping you form your thesis paper for final submission.  You will submit your thesis in Week 7 and then defend it in Week 8.  You will complete a proctored final exam in Week 8 also, which will be open book and open note.

Grading:

All graded items (including final grade) are based on the following matrix:

A = 90- 100%
(or 900 points or higher)

B = 80-89% (or 800 to 899 points)
C = 70-79% (or 700 to 799 points)
D = 60-69% (or 600 to 699 points)
F = < 60% (599 or fewer points)

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Each week runs from Monday morning through Sunday night, 11:59 pm. I enter grades AND ATTENDANCE for the previous week based on status from Monday morning and these grades are not changed.
 
Discussions or assignments posted on midnight Sunday, or after, will be graded as a zero.  If you feel you need more time on a specific assignment due to circumstances beyond your control, you must contact me BEFORE the due date.  Please do not assume you will receive an extension or "Incomplete" for a specific assignment or course grade.  You must contact me and gain my approval before going past a deadline.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

This course is offered on-line, over the Internet. Students are expected to devote a minimum of four hours per class week logged on to the computer conferencing system - the same amount of time you'd spend in the physical classroom. In addition, students are expected to devote a minimum of another four hours per class week studying the text and other online resources.

A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday and Sunday. The first week begins the first day of the semester and ends midnight the following Sunday. Assignments scheduled for completion during a class week should be completed by Sunday of the week assigned. Writing assignments and formal papers should be completed and successfully submitted, or postmarked, so that they are in my hands on the due date. Late assignments will not be accepted. NOTE: Because this is an online course designed to get feedback on assignments to you directly via Internet, you must make prior arrangements with me before submitting a paper via fax or the postal service. If you ever have problems submitting your assignments to the Dropbox, notify me immediately, and we'll get the problem solved.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Park University 2008-2009 Undergraduate Catalog Page 87
Plagiarism, especially for a class in Criminal Justice, simply will not be tolerated and will be grounds for immediate removal from the course.  If you have doubts, ask the question first to make sure you are properly giving credit to your sources.

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.
