Course Description:
HN302 Honors Scholarship: This course must be taken a minimum of two (2) semesters and can be taken for an additional semester. The continued participation in the Program requires approval of the advisor(s) and the Honors Committee. The advisor(s) will directly oversee and guide the student and the student must continue to progress in their plan of study. 2:0:2 Prerequisite: HN300

Educational Philosophy:

My educational philosophy in working with Honors Program students holds that the student will shoulder most responsibility for project design and completion. I offer guidance, act as a resource, and provide frequent critique to assist the student in attaining the desired goal she or he designates for a particular project. I expect students to utilize my comments and direction, however, the ultimate responsibility for the successful completion of the project is the student's.

  Instructor Learning Outcomes

  1. Present work at a professional forum
  2. Complete and turn in a final product to Honors Director (format will vary with subject area)
  3. Present work at a public forum located at Park University
Class Assessment:

Assessment will include:

  • Attendance at regular meetings with honors advisor or professor
  • Written progress reports at interval agreed upon by the advisor and student
  • Attendance at Honors meetings as called for by the Honors Committee
  • Presentation of research progress

Grading:

  1. Attendance at regular meetings with honors advisor or professor — 30%
  2. Written progress reports at intervals agreed upon by the advisor and student — 20%
  3. Submission of journal reports, minimum of 10 required— 10%
  4. Attendance at honors meeting as called for by the Honors Committee — 10%
  5. Presentation of research progress — 30%
The final grade will be based on the following scale:
A = 100-90%
B = 89-80%
C = 79-70%
D = 69-60%
F = 50-0%

Late Submission of Course Materials:

  • Due dates for all written, graded assignments and their components appear on the attached schedule. 
  • Adherence to the schedule is required to facilitate student progress and to complement instructor work load. 
  • Assignments may be turned in early if so approved by the instructor. 
  • No excuse for late assignments accepted, other than for medical emergency. 
  • Classroom Rules of Conduct:

    1. The student and honors advisor(s) should meet weekly throughout the course of the project to discuss concerns, progress, and expectations. It is important to maintain an open line of communication. 
    2. The student should expect to spend an average of 9-12 hours per week working on their project; thus, over the course of a 16-week semester, the student will devote approximately 150 –175 hours per semester to their honors project. The nature of research means that there will be some weeks where little time is spent on the project and other times when the student will be spending all their spare time working on research.
    3. Plan the path of exploration and writing for this and subsequent semesters.
    4. Plan the final project and the presentations to be made by the end

    Academic Honesty:
    Academic integrity is the foundation of the academic community. Because each student has the primary responsibility for being academically honest, students are advised to read and understand all sections of this policy relating to standards of conduct and academic life.   Park University 2008-2009 Undergraduate Catalog Page 87

    Plagiarism:
    Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Park University 2008-2009 Undergraduate Catalog Page 87

    Attendance Policy:
    Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

    1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
    2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
    3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
    4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
    5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
    6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
