Instructor Learning Outcomes
Attendance is mandatory and counts as 10% of students' grades. Participation in the class is critical and counts as 15% of students' grades. There will be daily quizzes, unit tests, and two major examinations (midterm and final). Students will also be evaluated on completion of homework assignments and a number of projects, presentations, and essays.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
All assignments are due the following class, with the exception of long-term or group projects. If students have an excused absence, I will accept their homework the next class; if they are absent without notice, they cannot turn in the homework late. I may make exceptions on a case-by-case basis.
Homework is due the class after it is assigned. Late homework may be accepted and given partial credit at the instructor's discretion.
Group presentations require full participation from all members of the group. If you are absent from planning or giving a presentation, you may not receive the same grade as the rest of the group.
Classroom Rules of Conduct:
No electronic devices of any kind will be allowed in the classroom: no cell phones, no iPods, no computers visible or audible during class. I will confiscate any electronic devices that I see or hear.
An open learning environment is critical to language learning success. Students will respect each other as well as the instructor. I will not tolerate unkind comments about other students.
The following topics are subject to change, but constitute the course outline. Each lesson will involve homework exercises and a test, plus one project to be presented to the class:

Project: 2-minute talk on famous immigrant to the US – due Sep /8

Project: Write and act out a skit between a landlord and tenant – due Sep 19

Project: Use instructor’s form to interview an American about their genealogy and report back to the class what you find out – due Oct 3-6

Plagiarism:Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing.
