Course Description:
MG420 Labor Relations: Consideration of the development, legal environment, and current problems of the industrial relations system. Emphasis is placed upon the historical evolution of both the union movement and the legislative system that shapes its activities. 3:0:3 Prerequisite: MG 352, MK351 and HR 353

Educational Philosophy:
The facilitator's educational philosophy is based on student and instructor interactiveness. The course will be desinged around lectures, readings, quizzes, dialogues, examinations, internet, web sites, and writings. Learners will have to actively engage and dialogue to enhance the course.

  1. Explain various perspectives of collective bargaining theories.
  2. Discuss the historical and future trends toward labor and management conflict resolution.
  3. Evaluate how labor relations theories can be applied to workplace practices including the students own work environment.

Class Assessment:
Your grades throughout the course will be assessed based on the follwoing:

  • Conference thread postings normally include a reply each week to at least one discussion question posed by the instructor in the Discussion Questions thread in the Discussion area. You will also be required to post your own Lessons Learned (LL) each week in the Lessons Learned thread in the Discussion area. Lastly, you will be required to post at least two Peer Reviews (PR) to a classmate's DQ or LL posting each week.
  • Your weekly quiz will be a multiple choice test, open book/open notes test on information presented throughout the week. 
  • A Research Assignment (RA) will consist of an essay type exam. You will have to answer 8 course subject related questions. You must upload your fully completed Research Assignment to the Course Home Research Assignment basket in the drop box area as a single file attachment (no multiple files will be accepted) as either a Word document, or if you are using another word-processing program such as WordPerfect, then I will be able to accept any file saved in Rich Text Format (.rtf), Hyper Text Markup Language (.html or .htm), or as a Text (.txt) document. No other file formats will be accepted for credit. Questions MUST be numbered and restated in their entirety at the top of each page and each question should have its own page(s) devoted to it. You must reference your work for all questions, both internal to the document and in the reference section. The assignment can not be based on your opinion alone.  
  •  The final exam is closed-book, closed-notes and will account for 30% of your final grade. The exam will cover material from throughout the course.

Grading:
Your Final Grade is based on a 280 point system.  Your final grade is computed as a final numeric grade (e.g. 252 points or 90%) and then converted to a Final Letter Grade as follows:

252 - 280 points will result in a final letter grade of an "A".
224 - 251.9 points will result in a final letter grade of a "B".
196 -223.9 points will result in a final letter grade of a "C".
168 -195.9 points will result in a final letter grade of a "D".
Less than an accumulated 167.9 points will result in a final letter grade of an "F".

Your Final Grade is made up of an accumulation of the following:

  • Class Participation (CP) which includes timely (to be completed not later than midnight MST on Thursday of each week) and appropriate conference thread postings account for 20% of your overall final grade.
  • You will be required to take a Weekly Quiz (WQ) online each week (to be completed not later than midnight MST on Sunday of each week) in weeks 1 – 7. There are 7 weekly quizzes. Each WQ is worth 10 points for a total of a possible 70 points. Those 70 points make up 25% of your final grade.
  • A Research Assignment (RA) is located as a menu item under Course Home and is due in Week 6. The RA is worth 25% of your final grade.
  • You will take a proctored, cumulative Final Exam sometime between Monday and Friday of week 8. The final exam is closed-book, closed-notes and will account for 30% of your final grade.

All final exams will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes.  If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth.  Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Associate Dean.

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business and Management.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
All late assignments will be subject to a 10 point deduction each week late and arrangements should be made with the instructor for the submission of late work. NO late assignments will be accepted after week 8 of the course.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Students are responsible for reading the course policies which include a discussion of the classroom rules of conduct. The link can be found in the course. However, each student must respectfully and professinally conduct themselves in the online environment and througout their discusions with Park staff, instructors, and classmates. Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.
