Course Description:

 Course Description: GO310 Sedimentology and Stratigraphy: The purpose of this course is to study the origin of sedimentary rocks and the physical processes that commonly influence them (deposition to diagenesis). The other portion of the course focuses on knowing the various types of stratigraphic units and methods of dating and correlation. The laboratory exercises will reinforce these concepts. 3:3:4 (From catalog 2008-2009)

Grading plan:
Your grade will be based on your score out of total points, approximately 600. For example, 646/850 = .76 *100 = 76% C. The course will use the traditional scale of 90%=A, 80%=B, 70%=C, 60%=D, and below 60%=F.

Exams: 3 exams worth 100 points; 1 final worth 100 points. = 400

Homework: 2 homework assignments worth approximately 100 points each = 200

Late Submission of Course Materials:

All assignments by the start of class. Homework turned in late will be counted off 10% per day, so you have 10 days to submit it before it becomes worth 0 Points. Students missing class due to participation in athletic or other school-sponsored events must turn in all homework PRIOR to their absence. Other exceptions: students who miss class due to an extended illness requiring hospitalization will be allowed to make up missed homework assignments.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

Students will be required to complete three lecture examinations and one final.  BE THERE!  The final must be taken on the scheduled date. Do not make early travel arrangements!  A make-up exam will be given ONLY if the student contacts the instructor before the next scheduled class meeting and gains approval from the instructor for a make up exam (584- 6475 OR scott.hageman@park.edu).   In the process of determining whether a makeup examination should be allowed, the burden of proof is on the student.  The instructor has the right to request verification of any excuse offered by the student.  The final decision will be the instructor’s.     Students will be allowed one make-up test. If the student misses two tests, they will be allowed one make-up and the second missed test will be scored as a zero. The make-up tests will be given on the day of the final examination. 
Exams and final will consist of multiple choice, matching, labeling, and short answer questions.

Extra credit:  No extra credit is available.

Students are held responsible for acquiring all materials and information missed during a class session from another student.

Wireless (cellular) phones and/or pagers must be either turned to the silent mode (vibrate only) or OFF in the classroom.  If you do receive notice of an emergency call/page (while not taking the mid-term or final examination) quietly leave the classroom to make or receive a call in the hall or outside of the building.  Talking on a phone during class is prohibited.

The instructor will strive to create an informal and comfortable classroom environment for class discussion. However, this is an educational forum and the instructor expects students to act accordingly.  Students will treat fellow students and the instructor with respect.  Disruptive or deliberately unhelpful viewpoints will not be tolerated.

Computers make writing and revising much easier and more productive.  Learners must recognize though that technology can also cause problems.  Printers run out of ink and hard drive crash.  Learners must be responsible for planning ahead and meeting deadlines in spite of technology.  Be sure to save copies of your work to disk, hard drive, and print out paper copies for backup purposes.

·         Do not go to the bathroom every class period.
·         Do not talk loudly to others during class.

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
