Learning Outcomes: Core Learning Outcomes
For CJ400, you must conduct research on a constitutional issue approved by your instructor and write a paper analyzing what you find, using U.S. Constitutional provisions, statutes, and court cases to support how you would solve the constitutional issue, and discussing social policy implications of your solution to the issue.
The purposes in conducting this research and writing this paper are to improve your ability to synthesize, analyze, and evaluate information carefully and objectively, using the U.S. Constitution, statutes, and U.S. Supreme Court cases; use this information to propose a solution to a constitutional issue; discuss social policy implications of your solution; and present your ideas in clear written form directed to a specific audience, in this case, your class.

The text of this paper should be at least 3,750 words or fifteen computer-generated/typewritten double-spaced pages long. You must demonstrate that you understand the terminology and the concepts used in constitutional law, and how constitutional provisions, statutes, and case decisions are interrelated. You must demonstrate that you can synthesize, analyze, and evaluate information. You must use correct APA format in source citations in both the body of the paper and in the reference page.
You will present your paper in class during the last week of class. If you are taking this course online, you will answer questions from your classmates about your paper in a discussion thread created for this purpose.

Computer literacy - Students are expected to have frequent access to a personal computer with a modem and web browser, access to the Internet, and an e-mail account. Computer literacy is expected (e.g. setting up files, familiarity with browsing and downloading Internet files, etc.).
Reading assignments - Students will be expected to read the assigned chapters in the textbook, the lectures and articles displayed for each week, and assigned material on the Internet. The Discussions and Assignments and Proctored Examination assume you have read the assigned readings.
Weekly assignments (Activities) - Students will submit to the Dropbox five assignments. These are not major research papers, but rather essays answering questions dealing with the topics covered in the course, case briefs of cases discussed, and any group projects. These should be completed in less than two (2) typewritten pages. Anything submitted longer than two pages will not be graded past the second page. As with any writing where the ideas or words of others are used, appropriate citation of the source, of those ideas or words, is required.
Research Paper/Core Assessment- For this class you must conduct research on a constitutional issue approved by Week 2 (posted in a discussion thread) and write a paper analyzing what you find, using U.S. Constitutional provisions, statutes, and court cases to support how you would solve the constitutional issue, and discussing social policy implications of your solution to the issue.

Proctored final examination - A computerized/written examination will be taken in a proctored testing environment during the 8th week at one of the Park University sites around the country or at an alternative location. For proctored examinations, photo identification is required at the time of the test. Guidelines for selecting an acceptable proctor can be found on the Park University Website.

Course Grading Scale - Students will be evaluated on the total number of points he/she earns as compared to the greatest amount of points that may be earned in each course activity. In determining the number of points assigned to an activity, the major factors will be the following questions:

Was the work completed on time?
You will be able to track your average throughout the course. The grading scale is as follows:
A = 90-100 (or 900 points or higher)
B = 80-89 (or 800 to 899 points)
C = 70-79 (or 700 to 799 points)
D = 60-69 (or 600 to 699 points)
F = 0-59 (599 or fewer points)
Each student is responsible for:
· Completing weekly reading assignments.
· Participating in weekly discussions at least three times a week..
· Studying various online resources.
· Completing five minor writing assignments, referred to as weekly assignments.
· Completing a 15 page research paper, turned in by Week 6.
· Completing a proctored examination during Week 8.

Late Submission of Course Materials: Work received after the end of the week will be accepted with a 10% deduction per day late. This applies to the activities and papers, not participation. Participation is required in the week it is assigned. See policy on participation.
Classroom Rules of Conduct: On-Line Participation
This course is offered on-line, over the Internet. According to Park University policy, students are expected to devote a minimum of four hours per class week logged on to the computer conferencing system - the same amount of time you'd spend in the physical classroom. In addition, students are expected to devote a minimum of another four hours per class week studying the text and other online resources.
A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday and Sunday. The first week begins the first day of the semester and ends midnight the following Sunday. Assignments scheduled for completion during a class week should be completed by Sunday of the week assigned.
