Course Description:
CS365 Computer Networking: This course provides an overview of computer networking concepts. Course topics include (but are not limited to): protocol layer stack, circuit switching vs. packet switching, connectionless vs. connection-oriented services, routing, Ethernet, LAN topologies, transmission media. Optionally, the course may provide hands-on projects. For example, students may be asked to install and configure a LAN, install and use Linux network applications, or write networking programs. Prerequisite: CS151 and CS208. 3:0:3

Core Assessment:
For this course, the assessment artifact is a final exam which counts for 20% to 25% of the grade. In the artifact there will be 4 questions in each of the categories. ( Critical Thinking: Synthesis, Analysis, Evaluation; Content: Terminology, Concepts, Application; and Technical Skills: Whole Artifact, Component, Relationship) Thus, there will be 32 questions total in the final exam artifact. The artifact will test all four of the core learning objectives in each category.
 
All Park University courses must include a core assessment tool that measures the degree to which students learn the course's learning outcomes. School policy dictates that a student's performance on the core assessment tool must count for at least 20% of the student's total course grade. For this course, the tool consists of the final exam. Therefore, the final exam must count for at least 20% of the student's total course grade. School policy dictates that the core assessment tool must cover at least 75% of a course's learning outcomes. To ensure compliance, all CS 365 instructors are required to give the same final exam. See the attached final exam artifact and artifact solution. To prevent cheating, students are strictly forbidden from keeping the final exam, the solutions, or copies of either.

The ICS Program Coordinator will analyze core assessment results for a sampling of all ICS courses offered. In analyzing the results, the ICS Program Coordinator will grade the exams using the (very specific) grading criteria shown on the exam solution. The final grade is in the form of a percentage where the percentages equate to the following levels of success:

The ICS Program Coordinator will use the core assessment scores to compare results across all instructional modalities.

Grading:

You will be able to track your progress throughout the course. The grading scale is as follows: A = 90%-100%; B = 80%-89%; C = 70%-79%; D = 60%-69%; F = 0-59%. You will know in advance the standards for each assignment. My goal is to give you prompt, clear, and useful feedback to help you to succeed in this class. Each student is responsible for:

  • Completing Weekly Reading assignments
  • Completing Weekly Discussions
  • Completing Weekly Projects 
  • Completing Weekly Quizzes
  • Completing Bi-Weekly Domain Exams
  • Completing a Final Examination. This step is essential!
  • Completing a Online Survey of Student Opinion of Teaching

Reading Assignments:

Students will be expected to read the assigned chapters in the textbook and the lectures. The Online Discussions, Projects, Quizzes, Domain Exams, and Final Proctored Examination assume you have read the assigned readings.

Class Participation (Online Discussions):

Students should visit the conference area at least three times each week or a minimum three hours per week, the same amount of time you'd spend in the physical classroom. See "Ground Rules for On-line Participation" in Online Course Policies for additional information.

Homework, Quizzes, and Domain Exams

All projects, quizzes, and domain exams should be completed on or before Sunday 11:59 pm Central time. Projects, quizzes, and domain exams must be done independently. Students will place completed assignments in the designated dropboxes. Do not post answers to the projects, quizzes or domain exams in the discussion area.

Submission of Late Work:

All projects, quizzes, and domain exams are due 11:59 pm Central Time on Sunday of the academic week. There will be 20% penalty for each day that a project report is late. Students are not allowed to take a quiz or domain exam that is scheduled beyond its due date.

Proctored Examination:

Final Examination - An examination will be taken in person during the 8th (or 16th) week of instruction at one of the Park University sites around the country or at an alternative location approved by the University where Park University sites are not available. It will be the responsibility of the student to arrange for a proctor, by the 6th week, who will be accepted and approved by the instructor. Guidelines for selecting an acceptable proctor can be found at the Park University website. For proctored examinations, photo identification is required at the time of the test. A proctor request form will be made available to you during the first week of class so that you can send your requested proctor to me for approval. Failure to take a final proctored exam (or submit your final project for some online graduate courses) will result in an automatic "F" grade. Some graduate courses may not require a proctored final examination.

Course Grading Scale:

This subsection should list the grading scale and weighting for all of the graded work during a course. The grading scale must use the following scale below, and point totals for each letter grade must be included (see example below). Example -

C = 70-79% (or 280 to 319 points)

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.
