Course Description:
MA 311 Linear Algebra: Topics include the general methods of solving systems of equations, determinants and matrices, vector spaces, linear transformations and introduction to simplex algorithms.3:0:3. Prerequisite: MA 211 or MA 221

Educational Philosophy:

The Instructor's educational philosophy is one of interactiveness based on
lectures, activities, quizzes, and examination. The instructor encourage exploration
of the material and questioning to deeper the student's understanding and empower
them to take responsibility to their success in the course.

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Solve a system of linear equations using Gaussian elimination.
  2. Perform arithmetic operations on matrices.
  3. Use the properties of invertible matrices to solve systems of linear equations.
  4. Use the determinant of a matrix to tell whether a system of equations has a unique solution or not
  5. Apply the properties of vectors in Euclidean n-space and provide a geometric interpretation where appropriate
  6. Apply the properties of linear independence, basis, and dimension
  7. Perform the Gram-Schmidt process
  8. Demonstrate what it means to say that two vectors are orthogonal
  9. Apply the properties of inner product spaces

Late Submission of Course Materials:

The instructor will accept late assignments for partial credit only and for
justifiable reasons, as deemed by the instructor.
Students should not expect to receive extra time on completing
assignments. Since the course is compacted into eight weeks, students
can not afford to fall behind in their work.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

Students are expected to participate fully in the class learning activities.
Phones and i pods can not be used in class, and should be placed on
vibrate or turned off.
Students are required to exercise courteous behavior between themselves
and the instructor.
Three unexcused absences will result in a grade of "F". All students should
consult with the instructor in advances if he/she is expected to be absent
for legitimate reasons.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Park University 2009-2010 Undergraduate Catalog Page 92

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
