Course Description:
This intermediate level statistics course covers the fundamentals of conducting quantitative research for the social and administrative sciences. The course is organized around a research project on quantitative analysis of data. PREREQUISITES: MA 120 and CS 140. 3:0:3

Educational Philosophy:

We are all learners throughout our entire lives.  This learning is from both formal education and “informal education”, or what some of us refer to as personal experience.  Since our personal experiences are by definition limited, there may come a time when we desire to enrich ourselves through formal education.  For some of us this may be knowledge for its own sake.  For many of us the desire to seek formal education is to prepare for future opportunities that would not otherwise be available.  But there is more to formal education than completing assignments and “filling squares”.  There is what we can learn from each other.  

 

This learning and interaction occurs while completing course objectives together.  I believe these objectives are introduced and measured best through lectures, readings, homework and your research paper/presentation.  Their completion enables all of us to learn things that would not be possible anywhere else.

 

Finally, I firmly believe that knowledge in the classroom must not only be acquired but also translated for personal application and for application in the work environment.  Enrichment is made complete when learning is applied in our own personal experience.

 

As a life long learner I look forward to your unique experiences that will enrich us all.

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Derive an original regression model and run it using Microsoft Excel. Write a paper explaining this model and its outcome.
  2. Given an Excel regression output, correctly interpret the model statistics including the statistical significance of the independent variables and the R-square statistic of the model.
  3. Find the predicted value of the dependent variable given a regression output with independent variable coefficients plus values for the independent variables.
  4. Conduct hypothesis tests and confidence intervals on the mean and the difference between two means using the "t" statistic.
  5. Conduct hypothesis tests and confidence intervals on the binomial statistic and on the difference between two binomial statistics using the "t" statistic.


Core Assessment:

All Park University courses must include a core assessment that measures the course Learning Outcomes. The purpose of this assessment is to determine if expectations have been met concerning mastery of learning outcomes across all instructional modalities. For this course, the core assessment is a final exam to be administered in all sections of EC 315. This exam is worth 30 percent of the student’s final grade and will test students’ mastery of core learning outcomes through short answer questions on specific knowledge, Regression analysis procedure, and hypothesis testing.

Class Assessment:

There will be two examinations, homework, a research proposal, and a research project with a formal presentation. The comprehensive final is not a take-home test. The comprehensive final is a closed book and closed notes exam.

Grading:

  • The midterm is worth 200 points (20% of the grade) and the final is worth 300 points (30% of the grade).
  • Students will be assigned homework problems. Homework will be assigned during class and will be due the week following the class the chapter(s) is/are covered.  Homework is worth 200 points (20% of the grade)
  • Students will complete a research project consisting of a formal proposal for an original multiple regression model, an analysis of the data using the appropriate tests, a presentation to their peers using PowerPoint, and a comprehensive report. The term project is worth 300 points (30% of the grade).

A = 90 - 100%

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Late work will not be accepted without the prior approval of the instructor

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

• Class participation is expected
• Students are required to read all material assigned prior to class and apply the material during class discussions, activities, and exercises.
• Students are expected to respect other students' opinions and values, even if they disagree with those opinions and values.
• Pager/cell phones: If you have to have it on, OK.  Otherwise, please turn them off or to vibrate.  Please step out of the room to take the call – quickly.  I am on call 24/7 and usually carry one.
• Food & drink: Keep the room and areas clean. We are guests in the room.  Please pick up after yourself and police the room before we leave.
• If I am delayed, I will try to call someone here.  
• I will return and review tests the following week.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
