Course Description:
A survey of the guidance process, communication, functions of counseling, and various counseling theories.  This course is designed to introduce students to the whole guidance process.  Emphasis will be placed on an integrated approach to basic helping skills utilizing theory, practice, and case application.  The course will provide students with the foundation to develop skills they need to establish effective helping relations. Suggested pre-requisite:  PS101 or equivalent.  3:0:3

Core Assessment:
Write a paper answering all the essay questions below using the APA format which would include a title page, abstract, page numbers, margins, internal documentation, reference page, etc. Answer questions separately and do not use a narrative or essay format for the whole document. Please preface your answers with the item number and letter of the question you are answering. e.g 1. (a.) Empathic understanding. When the counselor etc. Answers need to be thorough enough to demonstrate your understanding of each concept. If you use information from the text and/or outside references the information needs to be documented and direct quotes should be used minimally. In giving your answers, imagine that you are explaining this information to someone who has no prior knowledge of counseling terms, concepts and issues. The paper should not be cut and pasted but a reflection and application of your knowledge gained from the course. It should be a minimum of 700 words and include enough information to convince the reader that you understand the concepts, relationships, and issues you are discussing and are not simply reporting the information.

1. Define the following and give an example of each of the following in a counseling situation. Do not copy the definition from the text, lecture or glossary and do not use examples from the text—apply your understanding of the information to an example for a counseling situation.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

All assignments will have 10 points deducted for each class session when they are submitted late. All work must be turned-in for a  final grade. Any work not turned-in before the grading cycle will be assigned a zero and averaged into the final grade.
 
 

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

1. Attendance - Instructors are required to keep attendance records and report absences.  The instructor may excuse absences for cogent reasons but missed work must be made up within the term of enrollment.  Please remind the instructor if you are tardy to remove the absent annotation.
 
2. Tardiness - This unnecessary distraction disrupts and affects not only the instructor but also your fellow students, who in their own right have made a commitment and an obligation to arrive on time. When students are tardy five points will be deducted from their Participation grade.

3. Students who leave after the class break (6:00PM) will be counted as an excused absence. Those leaving without notifying the instructor will be reported as an unexcused absence.   Regardless of the circumstances you must notify the instructor.

4. If there is an illness or other unavoidable reason for missing class, the student must contact the instructor BEFORE class time to receive an excused absence.  If a student misses more than THREE class sessions, they will lose one letter grade.  More than SIX class sessions missed will result in a failure of the course.  Two UNEXCUSED absences will be reported to the Center Administrator.  

5. Participation - Students should be ready to participate and contribute. This means that you have read the assigned readings and are prepared to discuss them.  This course will consist of class discussion, small group discussion, group work, lecture and practicum (student counseling sessions). You are expected to take part in the discussions and group work. In order to follow and  facilitate your understanding of the lectures you are encouraged to download PowerPoint slides from the eCompanion website (www.parkonline.org).  Instructor will not provide these slides to you. Your in-class participation is another portion of your grade.  Assigned readings will not always be reviewed in class; examinations will be from both assigned readings and class discussions. Please be prompt; roll will be taken at the beginning of class.

6. Examination/Quizzes – There will be a mid-term and a final examination.  Exam answers will be objective and essay.  Examinations will be from both assigned readings and lecture notes derived from other sources other than your textbook.  If an examination is missed, it is the student's responsibility to contact the instructor BEFORE the examination to arrange for a make-up exam. Quizzes will be given periodically throughout the term, normally after taking roll has been completed. Once the distribution of the quizzes is completed, tardy students will not be allowed to take the quiz; it is imperative that you arrive to class on time. 

7. Core Assessment Assignment – All reports must be submitted on time, normally on the last day of class, since counseling terminology, definitions, and specific scenarios will not be completed until week seven and eight.  They must be submitted in Microsoft Word, Times New Roman, # 12 font, using proper spelling, grammar and source citation, i.e. APA format.  Your draft and final paper will be submitted through eCompanion drop box unless you make other arrangements with the instructor.
 
8. Counseling Practicum - Students are given the opportunity to practice their counseling skills during two in-class sessions/periods of the 7th and 8th week. Since this practical exercise can only be conducted in-class it is essential that you be present since there is no way to make up this assignment. 

9.  Computers make writing and revising much easier and more productive.  Students must recognize though that technology can also cause problems.  Printers run out of ink and hard drives crash.  Students must be responsible for planning and meeting deadlines in spite of technology.  Be sure to save copies of your work to a  hard drive or memory card and print copies for backup purposes.

 

Academic Honesty - Cheating on examinations or plagiarism will not be tolerated.  All written work must be your own, yours alone, with proper identification given appropriate authors.  Any occurrence will be reported to the Center Administrator, may result in an “F” and being dropped from the course and the university.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
