Course Description:
Consideration of the development, legal environment, and current problems of the industrial relations system. Emphasis is placed upon the historical evolution of both the union movement and the legislative system that shapes its activities. 3:0:3 Prerequisite: MG352, MK351 and HR 353

Educational Philosophy:
As for my Educational Philosophy:  I strongly believe in collaborative learning.  My philosophy of teaching is one of students interacting and understanding lectures, readings, quizzes, discussions, examinations, web sites and videos.  I also encourage each student to strive to reach his/her highest potential by applying what they have learned and discussing issues with fellow students and the instructor openly.  I believe that constant feedback is a necessity which I will continue to administer throughout the term to ensure course continuity!

  2. Discuss the historical and future trends toward labor and management conflict resolution.
  3. Evaluate how labor relations theories can be applied to workplace practices including the students own work environment.

Grading:
 

Class Participation (conference thread postings):  20% of your final grade.

Weekly quizzes (7 total): 25% of your final grade -- each has a 15-minute time limit to complete.

Research Assignment (due not later than 10PM MST on the last day of week 6):  25% of your final grade.

Final Exam (to be completed in week 8): 30% of your final grade. 

 

NOTE:

 

The comprehensive final is not a take-home test. The comprehensive final is a closed book and closed notes exam.

Proctored final examination - An examination will be taken in a proctored testing environment during the 8th week at one of the Park University sites around the country or at an alternative location. Failure to take a final proctored exam will result in an automatic "F" grade. For proctored examinations, photo identification is required at the time of the test. Guidelines for selecting an acceptable proctor can be found on the Park University Web Site.

 

Grading:
A = 90- 100%
B = 80-89.9%
C = 70-79.9%
D = 60-69.9%
F = Less than 60% 

 

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
For the most part, I do not believe in absolutes (there are always exceptions), but generally speaking, I do not accept assignments, conference thread postings, quizzes, etc., after the publicized due date. 

For example, if I do not see a posting or I do not hear from you, then I assume that you have made the decision to dismiss your opportunity to receive credit.

NOTE: Do not post anything in the conference area past the aforementioned deadlines. If you have not made your posting in time to meet the deadline, then your opportunity to receive credit for that posting is lost and gone forever. There is no way to make up those points. It is like taking a 'traditional class' on (for example) a Monday and Wednesday night where the class meets from 7:30PM 'till 10PM. If you show up to class at 11:30PM (regardless of the reason) you still missed that class. We can't say that you were present, when, in fact you were not. My advice? Never wait 'till Sunday night to attempt to make your conference thread posting :-)

There will be times when one or more of you will have to deal with scheduled and unscheduled absences (vacation, leave, babies, TDY, TAD, etc.). Please do not keep me guessing. If you are going to be absent, and you know in advance, prepare early and let me know about it by private Email. If you have an emergency - deal with the emergency! Then, when all is well, let me know about it and we'll work together to get you caught up. You should know that if I do not hear from a student for two weeks, I am obligated (I have no choice) to report the absence to main campus who then has to consider academic withdrawal from the course.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:

This is a 400-level (senior-level) class.  Students are expected to be prepared for class each week, and to treat the instructor and the other class members with respect and courtesy.
 
Students must ensure that their Park "Google Apps" account is up to date and functioning properly. 
 
General email: Students should use email for private messages to the instructor and other students. When sending email other than assignments, you must identify yourself fully by name and class in all email sent to your instructor and/or other members of our class.
 
Online threaded discussions: are public messages and all writings in this area will be viewable by the entire class or assigned group members.

Online Instructor Response Policy: Online Instructors will check email frequently and will respond to course-related questions within 24-48 hours.

Observation of "Netiquette": All your Online communications need to be composed with fairness, honesty and tact. Spelling and grammar are very important in an Online course. What you put into an Online course reflects on your level of professionalism. Here are a couple of Online references that discuss writing Online http://goto.intwg.com/ and netiquette http://www.albion.com/netiquette/corerules.html.

Academic Honesty:
Academic integrity is the foundation of the academic community. Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Park University 2009-2010 Undergraduate Catalog Page 92

Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.
