Course Description:
PY 206 Introduction to Physics II: A continuation of the calculus physics sequence. Topics include: wave motion, thermodynamics, electromagnetic and acoustic waves, properties of waves, electromagnetic theory and optics. 4:3:5 Prerequisite: PY 205.

The instructors educational philosophy is one of interactiveness based on lectures, readings, examinations, and Laboratory performance.

Learning Outcomes:
  Core Learning Outcomes

  1. Know when and how to apply the ideal gas law & non-ideal gas laws.
  2. Kinetic theory of gases and equipartition theory
  3. Identify and explain oscillatory motion and its application to the physical world.
  4. Explain and apply the concepts of electricity, magnetism and optics by: developing qualitative and quantitative descriptions of physical phenomena
  5. Predicting the results of physical occurrences based on physics theory and laboratory experiments.
  6. Outline and evaluate operation of electric circuits including the use of Kirchoff's rules.
  7. Develop knowledge of the atom and nuclear reactions.

  6. 6. Evaluate operation of electric circuits including the use of Kirchoff's rules.
  7. 7. Understand the basic laws of optics and light scattering.

Class Assessment:

Students are expected to read and study each chapter, complete assigned homework problems and laboratory exercises, and take test on the assigned dates. 


Tests: 4 to 6 hour exams will be given during the semester.  The lowest grade will be dropped and the remaining average will count as 40% of the final grade.  The homework assigened will be graded and recorded with the lowest grade being dropped.  The average of the homework grade will be 20% of the final grade.  The laboratory work will be graded and will counted as 20% of the final grade with the lowest lab grade dropped.  A comprehensive final exam will count as 20% of the final grade.
The grading scale is as follows:
A = 87.5-100%
B = 75-87.5%
C = 62.5-75%
D = 50-62.5%
F =  <50%

Late Submission of Course Materials:

Homework and laboratory reports that is one class period late being turned in will be accepted for 2/3 credit.  Work more than one week late will not be accepted for credit.  Laboratory work missed due to illness must be made up with in one week or it will be recorded as a zero.
Exams missed will be counted as a zero.  If you know that you will miss an exam due to scheduled conflicts you must contact me ahead of time and arrange to take the exam before the scheduled exam time.  No make up exams will be given after the exam is given.
Extentions in time may be granted for excused absenses.  Excused absenses are best acheived by notifying the instructor in advance of the class by email.

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Students will conduct themselves in a manner which creates an atmosphere of learning in the classroom.  Few students reach this level without being able to do this.  Ask questions but do not monopolize the time.  As there is much to cover in a semester, questions about homework which may take longer are best asked during office hours.

Week 6 &7 - Electric field and Potential
Week 8 & 9 - Capacitance and electric Circuits
Week 10 & 11 - Magnetism and electric fields
Week 12 & 13 -  AC circuits and maxwells equations
Week 14 & 15 - Light and Optics
Homework will be assigned for each chapter as it is started.
Tests will be scheduled and announced a week in advance.

Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
