Course Description:
HR 491 Senior Seminar in Human Resources Development: This course is intended to integrate concepts and techniques from the Human Resource curriculum into a framework of applied programs. This course is designed for the advanced student and will give the student an opportunity to investigate and synthesize various concepts of Human Resources management and to relate them to "real world" situations. 3:0:3. Prerequisites: EN306B, HR353, HR422 and MG365

Educational Philosophy:
The instructor's educational philosophy is one of interactiveness based on lectures, case studies, examinations, and class discussions. The instructor will encourge students to explore new ideas, to examine different points of view, and apply critical analysis to case studies and class discussions.

  5. Describe three challenges for white males facing more diversity in the work place.
  6. Write a brief assessment of the implementation and use of diversity programs and the effectiveness of these programs.

  8. Identify and describe three or more Human Resource Management Jobs for the future , the typical educational background of future HR professionals, and explain how these jobs will impact the other functions of the organization, as well as the organization's strategic plan.

Class Assessment:
There will be two examinations, case studies, and class discussions. Each student will have to be in charge of a group or team, and present the group's or team's decision on a case study. Class participation is NOT class attendence, but is taking part in class discussions. ALL examinations are closed book, closed notes and there are no take home examinations.

Final Grade= Total Points divided by 4

The course grade for students will be based on the overall average of homework and tests taken during the course in accordance with the weighting of the various requirements as stated in the syllabus.

All final exams in all School of Business courses will be comprehensive and will be closed book and closed notes. They will constitute 30% of the total course grade and will not be a take-home exam. They will be completed during the test week in the period designated by the registrar or by the Proctor in the case online courses. If calculators are allowed, they will not be multifunctional electronic devices that include features such as: phones, cameras, instant messaging, pagers, and so forth. Electronic Computers will not be allowed on final exams unless an exception is made by the Dean of the School of Business.

Late Submission of Course Materials:
Since timeliness is a critical aspect of Human Resource Management, this instructor will assess a 10% late penalty on assignments turned in after the due date. (This penalty may not be assessed if in the instructor's judgement there is extenuating circumstances.)

Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Cell phones are to be turned off or set on "vibrate" in the classroom. If you must answer your cell phone, you must leave the classroom to do so. Children of any age may not be brought to class. You may not leave the classroom and re-enter during an examination; if you leave the classroom, your examination will be considered "COMPLETED" at the time you left the class room.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
