Course Description:
SW205 Introduction to Social Work (MGE): This course introduces students to the profession of social work and provides an overview of the professional knowledge, skills, and values necessary for generalist social work practice. The various settings for social work practice and the types of services provided by social workers are explored.

Educational Philosophy:

The facilitator’s educational philosophy is learning through experience.  Students will interact with the community to research values attitudes, and beliefs are held within our local community. We will have journaling assignments in this class so we can evaluate our personal and professional growth.

  1. Describe a beginning understanding of concepts related to generalist practice.
  2. Identify in basic terms the origins, structure and characteristics of the American social welfare system.
  3. Articulate methods of helping, influencing and assisting people at micro, macro, and mezzo levels within a generalist framework.
  4. Exhibit foundation skills in effective verbal and non-verbal communication, including assertiveness, active listening, constructive feedback and advocacy.
  5. Describe a beginning awareness for ethical behavior and be familiar with the National Association of Social Work “Code of Ethics” and how these principles are applied.
  6. Describe the social work profession as it relates to mental health, health care, public education, public welfare, family & child welfare, corrections, business and industry.

Class Assessment:

Your grade will be determined by your classroom interaction.You are expected to sign in to the class and participate in discussions, journaling,  weekly reviews, and other activities at least four time per week.You should expect to spend a minimum of 5-6 hours per week spent online the same amount of time you'd spend in the physical classroom so please plan your daily/weekly activities accordingly. You will be sending and receiving Email, performing online research and interacting socially and professionally with your classmates.

Grading:

Weekly Reading/Lecture (0 points)Materials for exams will come from weekly readings and discussions. It is critical that you read the lectures, additional reading materials and links in order to prepare for weekly discussion questions, reviews, assignments and exam.
You will be expected to complete the weekly classroom readings and read the lecture. If it becomes aparent to me that you are not doing your reading you will be graded down for participation during that week.
 
Weekly E-Journals (16 postings {2 each week x 8 weeks} x 5 each pts = 80)
A minimum of two postings are required every week. These include:
1. Your "E-Journal" entry
Describe, in detail, and then reflect on a behavior or observation related to social work that you either directly or indirectly experienced during the week. Grading will be based on clarity and completeness of thought. Comments should be substantial and relevant to the topic, and contribute to further thought or reflection.
2. A peer review (responding to another peer’s "e-journal" entry)
This peer review should be more than a one-statement answer. Provide constructive feedback/reflection and follow the guidelines listed above. You required to do weekly e-journaling which will be part of your grade as well as your self exploration learning process.
 
Weekly Discussions (16 postings {2 each week x 8 weeks} x 5 each pts = 80) 
 A minimum of two postings are expected every week. These include:
 
1. Choose one of the three listed question sets to answer. In your response identify the question you are answering (for example: Q1, Q2, Q3). Participation is demonstrated through discussion. Answer all components of the question set. Provide specific examples to demonstrate your understanding. You must mention your readings in your posts. Remember, if you are using any material that is not your own, you MUST cite the work. This does not have to be a formal citation. You may provide a web link at the end of your answer OR merely report the source within your answer (for example: the book states; the lecture mentioned or per NASW Code of Ethics, etc…).

Grading will be based on clarity and completeness of thought, ideas supported by facts, logical arguments or research. Comments should be substantial and relevant to the topic, and contribute to further thought or reflection. The instructor will provide responses individually and/or to the class as a whole.
 
1. Respond to another student’s answer to a question set. This peer review should be more than a one-statement, short answer. Provide constructive feedback and follow the guidelines listed above.
 
 
 
Weekly Reviews (7 postings x 5 = 35 points)
Weeks 2-8 will begin with a “Week Review” summation of the previous week. Week 2 will begin with a “Week 1 Review” and so on ending in Week 8 with Week 7 Review. You are required to respond to this summation post. This review is important in making sure that all the key concepts from the previous week were fully developed and understood.
Grading will be based on clarity and completeness of thought, ideas supported by facts, logical arguments and/or research. Comments should be substantial and relevant to the topic, and contribute to further thought or reflection.

Assignment: Service Learning Project
I. Service Learning Experience (40 pts)Students are expected to contact the volunteer coordinator at a local social service agency, set up an appointment for an interview, and complete at least five hours of face to face contact with an individual or family that is currently receiving assistance.
Student is required to have the agency representative email (on agency letterhead) a Service Letter of Attendance to the online instructor detailing the assigned role/experience and number of hours completed. The Service Letter of Attendance verifies your experience and is 40 points.

II. Paper (250 pts) - Write a summary of your reaction and impressions of the Service Learning experience, include the following aspects of your experience.

Late Submission of Course Materials:

To be permitted to turn in late assignments you must receive instructor permission. If you do not receive prior permission to turn in an assignment late you will only be able to turn in an assignment for partial credit after you have spoken the instructor. If you are given permission by the instructor to turn in an assignment late you will receive partial  to full credit for the assignment depending on the quality of the work and timeframe in which the late work is turned in.

Course Topic/Dates/Assignments:

 
A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday and Sunday. The first week begins the first day of the semester (Monday, March 15th) and ends at midnight Pacific Standard Time (PST) the following (Sunday, March 21st).
 
Assignments scheduled for completion during a class week MUST be completed by midnight (PST) Sunday of the week assigned in order to receive any credit whatsoever. Writing assignments must be completed and successfully submitted to the Discussion thread or Drop Box (as directed by me). If you ever have problems posting your assignments, contact me immediately by Email or by phone and we'll get the problem solved.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism involves the use of quotations without quotation marks, the use of quotations without indication of the source, the use of another's idea without acknowledging the source, the submission of a paper, laboratory report, project, or class assignment (any portion of such) prepared by another person, or incorrect paraphrasing. Attendance Policy:
Instructors are required to maintain attendance records and to report absences via the online attendance reporting system.

  1. The instructor may excuse absences for valid reasons, but missed work must be made up within the semester/term of enrollment.
  2. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the semester/term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties.
  3. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a semester/term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of "F".
  4. A "Contract for Incomplete" will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course.
  5. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance or Veterans Administration educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the semester/term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student.
  6. Report of a "F" grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for those students who are receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned in item 5 above will be reported to the appropriate agency.
ONLINE NOTE: An attendance report of "P" (present) will be recorded for students who have logged in to the Online classroom at least once during each week of the term. Recording of attendance is not equivalent to participation. Participation grades will be assigned by each instructor according to the criteria in the Grading Policy section of the syllabus.

 Hello, my name is Amber Jeanne Green. 

My educational background includes an Associates Degree from Wenatchee Valley College, Bachelors of Social Work from Eastern Washington University and an Advanced Standing Masters of Social Work from Eastern Washington University.  I also have a Public Administration Certificate at the Masters level.

My professional background is diverse. I worked 6 months at a Homeless Shelter for Women and Children. While there I wrote grants in order for the residents to have the opportunity to engage in social activities such as see plays at the local theatre, visiting local zoos and other family building activities. I worked one and a half years as a Life Skills Specialist for Developmentally Disabled adults. I then went on to work for the Department of Social and Health Services. I had many roles in my 2 ½ year stint with the state. I was a pregnancy to employment TANF social worker, Social Security Facilitator, General Assistance Unemployed Social Worker, Planner/Manager of TANF SMART MOMS group, and teen family’s coordinator.  I currently work with state/federal offenders in residential reentry centers as a Case Manager.

You will find that being a social worker means you are many roles throughout your entire day, week and career. Best wishes to you all in which ever field you may pursue.
